Can anyone recommend a wireless logitech mouse that works well on the mac and has scroll and thumb wheels and some programmable buttons?
My old one is dying after many years and I can't find one that has good mac reviews with these features.

Yep, I'm using the wireless Performance MX Mouse along with a Logitech G710+ wired gaming keyboard. A good feeling mouse with great software.

Just about all the Logitech mice work well with the Mac.

TIP:
I would leave the Logitech driver software alone, and try SteerMouse instead.
It works great with my old Logitech MX-610.

^^^As I said above the Logitech software (Logitech Control, Gaming Software and Unifying Software) are all working GREAT for me on El Capitan and Sierra. Logitech updates their software frequently.
