Hi.
The idea of working in black and white that is mentioned above is this: if it ever moves beyond a personal website, you have something that can go straight to the print shop for a business card without having to reinvent the wheel. "Work small and work in B&W" are often heard in these threads, and that is why.
Balance is something to keep in mind no matter what you are designing. The R is a bit off to me, also, and I don't care for the stepped effect used on the right. I would go with something clearly symmetrical, with the space on right side identical to that on the left (as I view it), like parenthesis. Or make the right seem more purposeful and extend it evenly to the right and give it a flag look.
Just my thoughts. This is what it looks like in black.
Note: An R is an awkward letter to place in a circle shape. Flat on one side and curvy on the other, especially with a leggy serif like this.
