Logo criticism please!

Hi guys, i am soon to be launching a personal website, and i am mid in the process of creating a logo for it. It is attached underneath. Please be as critical as possible, and give as many improvement suggestions as possible. The colors are the website's theme colors, and i have used 'The Gimp' on a mac to create this logo.

What's the website's purpose? Potential market? Is it for a company or just for your own personal site?

Frankly, I find it uninspiring, but there could be meanings to the circular shape, colours & pattern which haven't been properly explained. Logos depend way more on meaning than they do on pure aesthetics.

Personally, I think the R would work better if it was one colour but other than that without more info on your site theres not really much else I can comment on.

The R is just not sitting right with me. I think it is the more amount of space on the left than the right.

Also, I'll say it before everyone else does...Try working in black in white first.

Hi.

The idea of working in black and white that is mentioned above is this: if it ever moves beyond a personal website, you have something that can go straight to the print shop for a business card without having to reinvent the wheel. "Work small and work in B&W" are often heard in these threads, and that is why.

Balance is something to keep in mind no matter what you are designing. The R is a bit off to me, also, and I don't care for the stepped effect used on the right. I would go with something clearly symmetrical, with the space on right side identical to that on the left (as I view it), like parenthesis. Or make the right seem more purposeful and extend it evenly to the right and give it a flag look.

Just my thoughts. This is what it looks like in black.

Note: An R is an awkward letter to place in a circle shape. Flat on one side and curvy on the other, especially with a leggy serif like this.

yeah, I think the logo needs a little more thought. I'm just not feeling the whole thing, not to be a a**.

I like what the person ^ said maybe try a different font to make it look a little better.

I think it would be more 'interesting' if the R was backwards. Looks good in my head.

Try some other variations on the "R." Sans Serif? Something very rounded along the lines of Gotham or Avant Garde. Or perhaps make the "R" yourself using a circle. Heck - try a lowercase 'r'.

I wouldn't call what you have a final logo. But you do have a solid jumping off point. I look forward to seeing some further explorations.

Another classic example of why logo development should be left to professionals. Well, that is if you are serious about your business or what you are trying to achieve.

However, if you are only offering a local service type of business and just need a quick logo- then what you have is lovely. Just slap it on the side of your pickup truck and you're good to go! "Roscoe's post hole digging service"

I am a part-time website designer, who currently designs for local businesses, looking to expand to the internet to attract a wider range of customers.

one question i have is:
With work in B&W do you mean the entire scale, or just the two shades?

Try combining the P and R together, I think a simple concept like that will work well.

I like the first one you posted, but maybe you can make the R a solid dark red, or something.

First thing I saw with the logo was IRF.

Logos with just letters are a nightmare at the best of times. Just write your name out in full in a suitable font (not the naff serifed R you have going on at the moment).
