The original seems to be lopsided...the top logo to the text. Overall the logo mark looks ok but the text and typography seems like an after thought. The gradient is dated but I understand why you went there. Seems like you just picked a font that would work and then added filters.
One little thing that at first I thought was just my eyes- until I measured it in Photoshop just now is the the text in both the circular and oval versions is off center to the left. Not hugely mind you, but enough for me to pick up every time I look at either of them. 
On the other hand, both versions are nice work, but I much prefer the circular version (with the eyeball connotation) too!

I'm aware that the alignment is off a little. Mostly I just threw in the text with the logo to show them together. I'll line them up so people don't feel lopsided.

I was somewhat limited with the font and typography. They wanted Bank Gothic because it matched some of their other products. I had originally used a very stylized Futura, which I thought worked great.
I freely admit that typography is one of my weak areas though, and am open to whatever suggestions you think would improve the text.
The text is actually a clipping mask for a blue and a brown box. Then I have a couple transparencies over them. I was trying to stay simple, since the logo itself is somewhat complex.
Ok... tried it with a perfect circle instead of the oval. still have some tweaking to do on this version, but i threw it together fast to see what it would look like with a circle.
Personally I like both. I think the circle works better with the cog but the wing looks too wide. I had to scroll back and forth several times to make sure the wings hadn't changed. Maybe make the hawk smaller? But overall it looks good.
EDIT: I just looked at the version in page two. I think it looks a lot better. The shadow looks perfect, and to be honest I don't notice the "wide wing" as much. Looks great!
