Hey all

I am having trouble finding the best way to pull of my design idea for a local company. The company is an electrical distributor and I am trying to make the "electrical" in the logo look like it was formed with an extension cord -- in other words, I'm trying to make an extension cord form the word "electrical"

I am quite frankly a newb at Illustrator and I'm seeking advice on the best method on how to achieve this affect

Thanks to all of those that have taken the time and provide suggestions!

Sorry, you gotta draw it, there aren't any shortcuts. You can do some intense searching for stock art (which will cost something). Not a thing to do would be ripping off an existing logo.

If you don't have the chops, and you want it done right, hire an artist.

CanadaRAM, couldn't it be done by converting the type to a path and then editing it to join the characters together as if it was one wire? (Do you see what I'm saying?)

Edit: In afterthought, it would probably just be easier to draw it... This is my 2 minute example of what I mean, though.

Thanks for the quick responses thus far

I have no problem drawing it out, I didn't know if there was an easier way to approach it though...

Like I said, I'm rather new with Illustrator -- how exactly do I render an imported jpeg (i.e. my drawing) into a vector image?

Again, thank you for the quick replies

Yep, I'd say play around in a sketchbook, maybe use a script. Then scan it in, and trace over with the pen tool. That will cover you for right now, but I would definitely say that if you want it done well, hire an artist. You won't regret it.

Are you looking from something like this?

(Maybe NSFW)

yes, in fact that's exactly what I'm looking for

and to respond to other posters -- the company I am with is a smaller company that has their main logo set -- they just gave me the opportunity to give them a sample of an idea I had for various mediums such as tshirts for their drivers and employees and/or coffee mugs etc.

take a picture of an extension chord, and use live paint to convert it into a vector drawing -- you might want to dumb the background first if you just want the extension cord -- or take it on a white background

then start manipulating it to look like what you want.

not every designer can draw -- just the good ones ;) LOL (note: I can't draw well -- and quit design -- i started learning -- but more for therapeutic reasons -- )

Great ideas so far guys

Thanks everyone for the advice and if I continue to have problems I'll let you know

thanks again, you've been extremely helpful
