1. is there a name for the style of logo such as the IBM logo where it is made up entirely of horizontal lines and not an actual font?

2. do you consider the yellow shapes in the Sprint logo to be lines or shapes?

Thanks.

1. Bad Design (At least as far as that logo is concerned, though I'm sure many would disagree)

2. Shapes

1) The IBM logo is probably a font with lines going through them.

2) Shapes. A line would be more uniform. Here you have the edges making unique contours.

Why?

Blue represents reliability; we associate blue with the sky and water which are always there. The lines represent speed and dynamism (taken from the link below). The tight tracking/kerning shows that they are strong and solid (as well as the use of all capital letters).

Not trying to change your opinion, just showing the meaning by the design elements of the logo. Course the meanings COULD be subjective still.

Here's a page from IBM's site describing the logo.

Yeah ... I would criticize one of the most famous logos of our time.

I was just reacting to it on a personal level.

I would be very interested in hearing the reasoning behind the design.

It might make more sense to me then.
