blah..blah..apple fanboys..blah..blah..

Ok..

Apple, and apparently Steve-O, forgot to consult with several 'techs' who post on here that whine about the lack of this or that. They swear that's why the iPad is not a true tablet and is a hack. <Sigh> Apparently the vast majority of the other 500k to 750k who have so far bought one disagree. The now-tiresome and broken record diatribe that is STILL being posted lacks merit in the face of compelling evidence that Apple was right. They act like it's still 1995 and Apple can't make a quality product. At the very least, they insinuate that Apple is taking other tablets and copying them. Hello..it's 2010 and Apple, just like 1984, looked at what was being made and said "Nah...we can do this better" (Do I need to point to their sales or is that too much of a reality check for you to contemplate?).

Good example is the comments about the battery. Even though it gets 10 FREAKIN HOURS of use...they trot out the "but it's not user-replaceable and it costs $100 to replace"(and get a whole newly refurbished iPad). HP Slate's proposed battery is NON-USER replaceable and 'supposed' to ONLY give you half the use...Yet..NOT A PEEP...Why's that? Ah..because it's not Apple and therefore not fun to bash (and that would be too much like pooping where you eat for most of them ...<wink>..)

Apple 'Fanboy' (or if your 12 you rant it as 'fan-boi) is getting to be outdated. It's like yelling "..You iPhoner!..". There are many people who don't own a Mac but do own an ipod, Touch, iPhone, and / or an iPad. They post how much they like it only to get the bigoted 'fan boy' title...why? Cause the opposite side of the coin is 'Apple Haters'...and they are just as vehement in their beliefs (but they can't be wrong  )

Apple didn't 'invent' the tablet...it 'developed' a better mass market tablet.

Apple isn't the only tablet manufacturer...just one of the best ones.

Apple never claimed it was a full computer or notebook...but their commercials show it being used like one.

Apple didn't 'downgrade' to a phone OS. The 'upgraded' a mobile OS. They added features and charge a small premium to use those features.

Apple does have 'constant product placement' and have superstar spokespeople...and THAT'S called marketing (which Apple is very good at).

This same post could be about....shoes.

Nike didn't invent shoes...they made them better.

Nike isn't the only shoemaker...they are just one of the best.

Nike doesn't 'claim' they'll make you a better athelete but their commercials look like it.

Nike adds 'features' (reax, shoxx..etc) to their shoes and charge a premium.

Nike has product placement and famous spokespersons...and is one of the giants in shoe advertizing.

So...you haters must be the Addida fans I keep hearing about. (Don't go by me...I don't wear tennis shoes at all...I'm allergic :) )

HP have been producing Tablets for years - have a look at this one from way back when

Image00021_small.jpg

They were actually really good machines (originally introduced by Compaq as the TC1000 before they were bought by HP who updated it and called it the TC1100) and had a removable keyboard that slotted into the bottom, converting it into a notebook. If anything, the design was ahead of the technology of the day because they were a bit underpowered...

uhm. not a "really good machine"... I had to field test and use the TC1100 for my company, and it was anything but a "good machine". Very slow. Stylus input was glitchy. No optimized software for it. Handwriting recognition was terrible. The keyboard was very flakey and failed on EVERY unit we put into the field. PCMCIA card slot failed on about half our units. Bluetooth was DOA on over half our units.

Undocked, it got worse. Input was terrible, the handwriting dock wouldn't come up when you needed it, and when it did come up, it was always in the wrong place.

VGA output was flaky. Couldn't switch from computer screen to projector on ANY of our units... the projector output was scrambled. External monitors exhibited the same phenomenon.

My motherboard on my computer had to be replaced twice. Keyboard replaced 3 times. Bluetooth replaced once. Wifi module once. Gave up on the card slot.

So... not really a great machine. However, it was WAY ahead of it's time... I'll give you that.

yeah, but where Apple shines is the APP store, soon there will be 1000's of iPad specific Apps;):D:cool::apple::apple:

This is the type of discussion you often see, either openly or between the lines, when you work directly with engineering teams.

It comes down to this:

Consumers like a product, engineers try to tell them they should hate it.

Engineers like a product and try to convince consumers they should love it.

The missing piece is that consumers don't care that much about specs, they care about the user experience and whether it does what they want in an easy, pleasant way.

If engineers could persuade consumers to see things their way, Apple would have been shut down circa 1995 and everyone would be using Linux. (A lot of engineers like OS X, but pre-OS X, the hatred by engineers for MacOS was pretty strong.)

4D - you are in essence trying to convince people who love a product that they should hate it. You should question your premises.

The one thing that sets apple above others right now is the fact that it has thousands of apps made specifically for a touch interface. For that fact alone it's pretty awesome.

But if you really think that it can't be improved then you are drinking the koolaid too much.

Of course it can be improved, it's the first generation of a device that is different from previous devices in significant evolutionary ways.

The questions aren't whether it can be improved. The questions for consumers are:

- is it worth buying today as-is, given my needs and goals?
- are there any competing devices that are better for my needs and goals that I should buy instead?

If you wait a year, you will have a better range of options including most likely iPad 2 (whatever that turns out to be). So would you rather have no device, or a different device, or a competing device in the meantime?

Waiting for the perfect gadget is a false choice. Next year when iPad 2 is announced, people will immediately start wondering about iPad 3.

Apple didnt invent the tablet just as they didnt invent the MP3 player or the smartphone. However, they DID create a huge market for them allowing other companies whos products were invisible before to actually be noticed.

True but tell me what device does the iPad currently replace that consumers really needed? Let's be honest here it is 100% a nice to have device. Because of it's nature it's perfectly right for people to be critical about it before purchasing. There are a lot of people who really don't need it at all and therefore spending 499-699 of their hard earned money thinking they have a "magical" device.

For most people it might be the right choice to wait when tablets have matured and have more functionality (including the ipad 2). Maybe even the ones coming out this summer could have functionality that they NEED but isn't on the iPad.

For example.. (i've used this one a lot). When I make documents I usually need to be referencing multiple other documents at once , referencing / copying - pasting / etc but the ipad doesn't let me do that at all.

Nah..inside secret us Apple "fan boys" know...we get Belgian Beer from Steve.

Whate do you guys get from Balmer? Day old Seatle's Best? In styrofoam cups?

:)

hahahahahahaha. that one was pretty good. Im not a MS fanboy though, that post just went pretty hardcore into defending the ipad. The opportunity was too good to pass up haha

It's cool...matter of fact it was supposed to be a joke...it was too good an oppurtunity for a witty reply ;)

Besides...everyone knows Apple fan's don't drink Kool Aid...only vegan organic 'free-range' fruit juice

Lol... free range fruits!! The next thing in organic produce! Makes sure all those apples and oranges can roll to their hearts content!

Nothing, really. Fanboys and the hype machine have blown most of the "novel" aspects of the device so far out of proportion that people (like you, based on your posting history) have no grounding in reality.

Would disagree with you. Sort of like with the iPhone, Apple came up with a product that folks are learning to use in everyday life. I had a Treo phone on Sprint till the 2nd day of the iPhone 1G release. It has been the best phone ever for me since. Everything I wanted in a phone and more.

I expect that the iPad will turn into the same thing for me in the end.

Since the iPad's release I have looked at how I use my MBP, and it is very much what the iPad was designed for. Browsing the web, reading emails, viewing videos.

500,000 plus units sold tells a different story. Was on the fence about the iPad till a customer shared his with me on Saturday.

hahaha good news for you i work at whole foods. Vegan products for all!

True but tell me what device does the iPad currently replace that consumers really needed?

Really needed? Nothing. The world has survived quite a while without iPads and it could continue to do so.

But as with almost any consumer product either of us could name, that isn't really the point. Does it make your life better? Do you think it's worth the money? Do any other products make your life better to an even greater extent, or do the same thing for cheaper? The answers to those questions will go a long way to determining whether an iPad is a good purchase for you.

But the key is, it's a person by person thought process. We have a number of people popping up on this board who have decided (based on valid reasons sometimes, fanboy reasons other times) that the iPad isn't the right choice for anybody, and attempt to convince happy owners of this.

In the end I think the iPad will be the net appliance that folks have been looking for....

Many of us don't need netbooks, MBP's, or iMac's that we port day to day.. but the iPhone did show us how we can be connected on the go - the iPad is an evolution of that....

Well been a fun day out with my wifi iPad today....

Jury is still out as to whether I will miss not having the 3G feature of the next iPad. Would have been fun to have shown off the wireless nature of the iPad at work today in our wireless shop. :(

Time will tell over the next couple of days...
