Lombard Hard Drive install problems.. does not recognize OS

I just bought a G3 Powerbook Lombard off someone.
The 6GB hard drive was too small for me so i swapped in a 20GB i had lying around.

Originally it had OS 8.6 on it... so i want to install OS X 10.3 on it.
When i put in the OS 8.6 CD in, it loads up the cd, but when i try to install the OS, IT DOES NOT RECOGNIZE the hard drive.

When i put in the OS 10.3 CD in, All i get is a Apple screen with the spinning circle below it.

Is there some special way of installing the HD? I'm not used to OS 8.6 / 9 as i've always used OS X.

Any help appreciated.

Assuming that you don't have anything on the 20 Gb hard drive that you need, you can use the 8.6 CD to reformat the drive to HFS+ (HFS Extended) using Drive Setup. You'll find it in the Utilities folder on the 8.6 CD.

When you fire it up it'll look a lot like this...

You select the drive you want to format (odds are it may not be mounted yet), and click initialize. You should then be given a window that looks like this...

Clicking custom setup gives you this window...

where you can select the number of partitions and the volume formats for them. This is what the pull down menu should end up showing, and this is what the volume information pull down menu would show.
After that, you can restart with the Mac OS X CD and it should have no issues seeing the drive.

This should all be able to be done using the Mac OS X CD and Disk Utility (from under the Installer menu, but as you said that you couldn't get past the startup screen, this way may be the easiest.

You'll also need XPostFacto to run 10.3 on a G3, I'm pretty sure. They can only run up to 10.2 otherwise.
