Hi,

I'm going on a trip to London for about 2 weeks, I was wondering if there are any special rules or laws about street photography in London that I should know? :)

I have heard weird things like you cannot have a tripod at the metro and other public places.

Is it all nonsense or there ARE things I should be aware of?

Mostly common sense applies. Use of tripods in congested (private property) areas such as tube station platforms is unlikely to be allowed. There are also likely to be restrictions on commercial-use photography in many popular attractions. Here's a link to a quick guide - a few years old but probably still pretty relevant.

Hope you have a good time!

I wouldn't worry to much. You can take photos most places as long as it's public.
But it's the tube not the metro!

And dont be daft. If the police ask you what you are doing, just tell them. Dont be one of the dafties who scream civil liberties...

While you have the right to photograph what ever you want, they will just make it diffucult for you so better to just be smart and cooperate.

That's for sure man, I just wanted to be prepared a bit to avoid awkward situations.

You would be surprised how many clowns try to smart mouth them. It is just pathetic. Some things they get twitchy about like Paddington Basin for example. So just be smart and you will be cool. In fact the hardest part will be finding a spot with a good view that isnt already 20 Canikons deep... :)

This page provides some good general guidance on the subject

Thanks Phil! I believe it's exactly what anotherscotsman gave me!

Have a great time... don't forget to visit the pub and have some proper beer... One of my faves is a London brew... Fullers ESB!

Sound advice indeed. If you get the chance, maybe travel outside London, see a bit of the place. Obviously, the further North you travel, the nicer it is, but London is a good start...

Lol.... Wait for it....

Here it comes...

Should you end up at Canary Wharf be aware it is a private estate and you need a license to take photos. At least that was the case about 8 years back, when I was last there. License can purchased from the onsite estate office.

No way! My dad was born in Lobley Hill Gateshead. I grew up in Newcastle and we moved out to Washington as I grew up.

Nice. Like you even more now... :)
I only lived there a couple of years, but I liked Newcastle as a place. People were warm and Friendly. A few good night out in the Big Market I barely remember!
