is there a simple way to calculate the shutter speed needed for a long exposure know what f number and all you want to use and accounting for any filters that may be used

You need a TTL light meter.

What are you shooting?

Example: If shooting stars/ or something of equal nature, then, put the camera in Bulb mode, get a cable release, and lock the shutter open. Lowest ISO possible i.e. 100, F/11 to F/16, then start doing variable exposures. By doing that, you will develop your own baseline for exposure values, for your needs :)
