Long period phone storage question

My first ever smartphone, an Iphone 5s 16g, is coming up on being 2 years old and I am thinking of replacing it with a new SE 64g. My plan was to keep my 5s for a backup in case of accidental damage to the SE. My question is, what is the best method of storing an inactive phone, and will the battery eventually be degraded and eventually ruined in doing so?

The battery will maintain it's life the best if it is partially charged during storage (somewhere between 50-80%) as being either fully charged or especially being fully discharged is hardest on the battery. It won't last forever but depending on the battery's current condition it should continue to be usable for some time. If possible you may want to take it out every few months, fully charge it and allow it to discharge back to below 80% before turning it off to store it again.
