Hello all,

Just as the title says, I'd really like to try out the new iPhone when I'm ready to upgrade.

I currently use the samsung galaxy note 8 and to be honest I'm tired of the large screen. I know iphone makes large screens too but I was interested in the 4.7" iPhone 8.

For experienced apple users, would you say that the iphone 8 is still a good phone to buy even though they just came out with the XS? In terms of features?

Also, I was interested in getting the apple watch as well. I also currently use the samsung gear s2 smart watch but I really like the design of the apple watch.

When I upgrade my phone, I believe it probably won't be until Sept 2019 so this post is probably being written to early. Do new iphone models come out every year? What about the watches? Also with the watches, would I be able to download new watch faces? Something i really like with the samsung watch because i tend to get bored with some watch faces easily.

Also if I were to buy the iPhone 8 would it be better to get the series 4 watch or series 3? Or does it not matter?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

New phones and watches come out yearly. The watches haven’t changed as much from year to year as the phones, with the new series 4 watch being the biggest change so far.

Unfortunately you can’t download third party watch faces. You can customize faces provided by Apple, and create faces based on images in your photo library. But you can’t, for example, by watch faces from developers.

The iPhone 8 is still a great phone. Can easily last you a couple years. It’s still faster than most new android phones and will receive Apple iOS software updates for quite awhile.

Either the series 3 or 4 watch would work great with iPhone 8. I just went from a series 0 to a series 4 and love it.

I was an avid Android user for years and was heavily involved in the developer community (xda) and I switched to an IPhone last year when the X came out and now have the xs. I also was never a fan of huge phones. I've never owned a note series for that very reason.

However, if you're thinking of getting an 8 I would suggest trying the X or Xs. Footprint wise they are pretty much the same just that the X/Xs has more screen. I was never a fan of the huge bezels on iPhones even before all screen devices where a thing. Like when I had a Sony Xperia 3 compact. That had the same size screen as the smaller iPhones 4.6 or 4.7 and it's footprint was considerably smaller than the iPhone. I think the form factor on the X/Xs is perfect. It's not too small, and it's not overly big. It's like the Goldie locks version. Haha

I can't comment on the watch as I have never owned an Apple Watch although the 4 is tempting me so much.

No. iPhone 8 has the same design as the first generation phone. X-series onwards iOS the way to go. You have no idea how much of a boon the lack of button and faceID is, let alone the cool effect of having the screen everywhere.

My advice as always with smartwatch - only get it if:
  • You NEED to see (and interact) with notifications ASAP, without taking phone out. and;
  • You want to track your exercise data.
If both of those don't apply, then there's either cheaper or better options, or it'll be a waste.

New iPhones every year. Watches, not so much, maybe 1-1.5yrs. Series4 is the one to get if you're new to it - it's the watch it should have been to start with.

download new watch faces?
No, there's no watch face store. You can pick and choose which of the available faces, but stuff like Hermes and Nike faces are blocked off unless you get that branded watch.

Also, you say you quickly get bored of the Samsung watch faces. What about your phone features? Keep in mind, iOS has almost zero customisation options. You can choose your background, and notification sound. That's about it. It's vastly different to Android, and you need to be acutely aware of (and okay with) this when switching to Apple.

No. iPhone 8 has the same design as the first generation phone.
As in it still has a home button (although a fairly different one that also can do more like Touch ID) or still has bezels? Doesn't quite make it the same design, nor does that somehow make it bad (and can actually make it even better as far as being a more perfected version of an established design).

The design is the same. Top bezel, screen (thick side bezels), bottom bezel with home button. Zero change.

I'm not a fan of it, some people are. I couldn't just on the X fast enough. It's a phone for today.

I went from Samsung to my first Apple (8 Plus) nine months ago and LOVE the phone. It works really well and transitioned from droid to iOS very easily. I liked it so much that I bought a Max and plan to pass the 8 to my wife very soon. No diff (except batt life) on the smaller 8 just a size that seems to be your preference. Good phone!

That said, if you don't plan to actually upgrade until next September, I would wait and see how things develop. You might see something preferable in another current Apple, or you might see something in next year's release that works for you. But droid to iOS is nothing to fear.

Thank you for all your replies!!!

I’m typing this on my new iPhone XS! I could not wait lol and I accidentally dropped my note 8 again (I swear it’s because it’s too big) and the touch screen was not as responsive to one side and it was bugging me.

I’m really excited as this is my first iPhone and I think I’m going to get the watch soon as well.. maybe in a few weeks. It’s been several hours since I’ve had this phone and I think I’m adjusting well.. I just miss having swype lol

You can install a third party keyboard that supports swipe typing.
