Something buggering me for years. Wondering if anyone has a real solution.

After I search through my Gmail emails (Apple native Mail), occasionally - but more and more frequently - the unread email count craters.
I have ~60 unread emails, and after searching this morning, it went to 4.

The "solution" is not a good one - going as far as to completely remove and re-activate my Gmail account, OR deleting and re-installing the Apple Mail app (which then breaks iCloud mail). It's a PITA, and also related to the Mail app overnight battery drain (light blue/background activity).

Anyone have any other ideas, other than above?

I had to delete the Mail app - again - because deleting Google sucks and corrupted my Google account.
