AKA, please help me decide which MacBook I should choose, with a particular focus on the M1 chip and RAM.

I am a casual user--internet, email, word processing, FaceTime, Zoom, occasional (very limited) video editing. The one thing that taxes my laptop is gaming. By gaming, I mean single player strategy/RPGs. I've been using a 2015 MBP that still works fine for day-to-day stuff, but the battery is starting to give out and games like D:OS2, Disco Elysium, and Pathfinder:Kingmaker are laggy even on low/medium settings. I would love to try some newer titles like PoE:Deadfire, the new Pathfinder, or BG3, but I dare not subject myself to the inevitable frustration that would occur on my current machine. It's time for an upgrade (and I'm too entrenched in the Mac ecosystem to go for a PC just for games).

Basically I'm trying to figure out if buying an M1 MBA is a better long-term choice than one of the new MacBook Pros with the more advanced chips. (The 14" screen and MagSafe are attractive.) Also wondering if it's best to wait for the 2022 MBA. My priority is a combination of future-proofing, affordability, and meaningful quality. Will the M1 make for a (relatively) good gaming experience for 5-7 years? Or are the newer chips the better bet? And oh yes...how much RAM? Thanks!

Honestly, if your main computing use is gaming then I would consider a PC. Most games on Mac are typically poor ports of PC versions, running in Rosetta, and not developed for arm.

Defining gaming in your world.

For the sake of argument, lets say that native high-end gaming is better on Macs than it actually is.

A fan-less computer with a general purpose CPU/GPU is hoping to be worse for gaming than a performance-oriented computer with a powerful GPU and two good fans to keep it cool.
