iPhone 8/Plus Longevity of iPhone 8

Need to update from iPhone 6 (considered getting battery changed during promotion, but didn't) Almost upgraded last year, but kept 6. I really like the size of my 6, so am considering purchasing an iPhone 8. I am a light user - talk, text, few apps, some picture taking. No banking, etc. Since I don't upgrade often, wanted to be sure the 8 would take me a few years forward. Thought about an iPhone X, that would be $300 more and while bigger not quite plus size.
Appreciate any insight from anyone.

If you like the form factor and size of the 6, the 8 would be a great phone for you. It will be supported for at least 3-4 years and you will get significant upgrades over your 6.

With the iPhone 8, being that you don’t upgrade very often, I would expect at least three more years of iOS updates. If you look at the performance specifications of the A11 bionic processor, it’s very capable of more than enough tasks that you probably would need to accomplish on your iPhone.

I have an 8 plus and can easily see myself keeping it 5+ years

Performance is quite stellar on iOS 11.4.1 so I won’t update my iOS version unless I am forced to.

In 3 years or so when the battery starts to degrade I’ll simply get a $50 replacement from Apple so I don’t need a new phone.

I’d say upgrade but don’t pay full price. The phone is a year and half old.

I definitely find iOS 12 to be both faster and more stable on my iPhone 8.

While others might like upgrading their iOS version, as a general rule I don’t. If anything I like keeping my devices on the OS they originally came with.

In the past I’ve experienced Apples planned obsolescence on my older devices via iOS updates, that either slow them down or severely reduce the battery life.

I am 100% happy with my 8+ on iOS 11.4.1... so for me it’s just not worth it to update and risk reducing my battery life or performance.

i think with upgrading to anything newer than the 8, avoid ios updates. I personally am sticking with 12.1.1 because i read there was issues with the newest .2 and .3 and it’s just not worth the risk in updating. next thing you know, apple will implement cpu/battery throttle on the latest iphones like they have already with the A11 phones

Thanks for everyone's input. Had a chance to use family member's XR over weekend for extended time and the increase in size wasn't as big a factor as I had thought it would be. That combined with the extra trade in value for my iPhone 6 made the XR a good deal for me. Went with white, but the red made it a tough decision. The screen is fine to my eyes and being a light user I expect to have the phone for many years.

Fair enough, the potential security risks are enough for me to update. iOS 12 has been solid for me so far on my iPhone 8.

That’s a good phone and probably will have even better battery life for a light user. Hope you enjoy the new phone!
