Looking at getting a MacBook/MacBook Pro...

I'm a pc guy but I've been working with Macs at work for just over a year now. Kinda strange how I've worked in a Mac based company and don't actually own one myself.

Anyway, for quite a while I've been eyeing (is that even a word?) up a MacBook, specifically the higher spec white. With the new update, this has been even more appealing to me, but I just can't decide whether to buy the MacBook or upgrade for a few hundred more (would rather not, but it doesn't really bother me) and get a pro.

Would mainly use this for video editing (not a professional or anything) and web dev. I think the normal MacBook would do the job fine,but then I also think that it's only a few hundred... ahh.

Then there's the glossy or anti-glare..

I know this is entirely up to me, but I want to see what other people chose in the same situation.
 
If the MacBook will do you it should be a fine machine.

But the bump up to the MBP might be a few hundred, but if you are rough on equipment or careless -- it is quite expensive to repair. It is just something to note if you have to stretch finances to get a MBP.

A carbon fiber or kevlar MBP would be nice.
 
CF would be very nice indeed. :p

Does the 2.2GHz whitebook run leopard and FCP ok? If they do then I guess there's no need to buy the pro. Also means money towards software.

The price difference between top whitebook and low mbp is actually £470.. seems quite steep for the differences. I've decided the whitebook will do fine and maybe later this year I'll upgrade... who knows. ;)

The LCD backlighting on the MBP is fantastic... that and the higher quality build are worth the money alone.

I find the Macbook edges quite sharp on the wrists.
 
Ahh, now I want the pro. I guess I'll just have to think about it for a while and decide...

I got the anti-glare, which is nicer on the eyes, but the glossy screen is very nice indeed and I agree that it makes the colour saturation look noticeably better. Overall the matte is more functional though (rather than pretty).
 
The MB can do everything you want it to do, and probably will want it to do for a years to come.
The MBP can do everything you want it to do, and probably will want it to do for years to come.

Speed wise, they're the same. graphics wise, the MBP blows the MB out of the water at least it did, I'm not sure now with the x3100.

However, I always got the impression that the MBP is just a more refined machine.. it might be physiologic though.
 
No doubt the MBP is a step-up from the MB with 2GB RAM out of the box, bigger screen, and better graphics card; however, those machines are designed for the professionals are doing serious work and need the best graphics and more RAM and bigger screen. If you are just needing a portable to do mild video editing, graphics, and web development than everything I have read says the MacBook is a great choice. If you have the funds, get the better machine, if you are in the boat that I am and don't honestly need the extra power and can't justify the extra money than just get the MacBook.
 
Well the CPU is now the same, and I do like the white design on the MacBook (albeit plasticy).. I can always upgrade the RAM for a pretty small price so the only difference would be screen size (would rather the small to be honest) and GPU - which is yet to be benched?

Cool, think I'm going to be saving myself quite a bit of money.

What are the chances of an upgrade in Jan? If it's unlikely then I'll probably go and buy one at the end of the month... if I ever decide that is. :p
 
Oh, didn't realise the UK had refurbished machines on the store.

I'm not so much worried about the price, more the price difference. I can get 12% off at John Lewis because of my Mum's partnership discount, so that takes a MBP to £1159 and a MB to £740... £419 difference.

I now think I'd be better off getting the MB as I'm not going to be using it for "Pro" things. The differences in specs are minimal (bigger screen, more ram, better graphics chip) and mean nothing to me really, but the quality difference between the two is what made me want the Pro.

£419 will pay for some nice accessories, or even just some nice savings to go in the bank. :p
