Looking to take better video of the family on outings, events, etc. Im not a photo buff and don’t want to spend more then 1k if it can be helped. I’d like to limit the scope of cameras to “new”. The GoPro’s are cheap and claim to be able to do this but are known to overheat cutting recordings down to 30 mins. The Sony ZV-1 seems almost perfect but caps out at 4k30. Is there anything that will fall into my budget? Or am I asking for too much for too little money?

I appreciate any and all help from those that know far more than I do.

In past video recordings have you have clips longer than 30 mins?

Will the camera be used for fast action/movement video recording? 60fps is pretty high when 24fps/30fps are often the norm.

just an addendum to @Adarna (oh, just discovered that “suspended” accounts can’t be referenced ?): what is the intended use scenario?

I admit I’m not much of a video shooter, but I believe that’s a pretty demanding spec, so it’s not found in budget bodies (where 4k30 is the usual limit). The Panasonic GH5 II is pretty popular for video and meets your requirements, but it’s not under 1k, and it may not be the cheapest option either.

Also, the 29:59 cutoff is often an artificial limit placed on the camera, as anything that records for 30min or longer is considered a camcorder in some countries, which puts it in a different VAT category.

That's interesting about the VAT artificial limit. Wish that was the case with the GoPro, it just overheats around that point. ok so I do believe my question was answered. Under 1k I'll be limited to 4k30 and im sure that'll be fine for 99% of shooting. I think the ZV-1 is the best value for me. Thanks for all the help everybody.

Is the primary focus (sorry for the pun) going to be shooting video? In that case, probably people who participate in the digital video forum here could be helpful as well....

Both, but yes mostly Video. I honestly prefer the size of Cameras (DSLR or Mirrorless) vs their Camcorder counterparts. If the recording device is too large, I just won't end up using it as much as I'd like to.

Why don't you consider an iPhone for shooting videos?

It can handle it pretty nicely.

Have a look at the Fujifilm X-T3, potentially a good condition used copy. You’ll then want to pair it with a lens that has image stabilisation unless you plan to put it on a gimbal.
