Hello everyone. I've been searching around on the internet to see what options are available as far as loptop desk/pillows are concerned and I'm not having a whole lot of luck finding something I like. I just want something comfortable and practical to rest my eventual 17" MBP on when I'm sitting on the couch so I don't burn my legs or cause myself to go sterile.

Anyone know of any good websites that offer this soft of thing? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

i'd recommend a lapinator (see http://www.lapinator.com). found a review of one on http://www.the-gadgeteer.com and bought on one ebay shortly thereafter. my rev. a 12" powerbook can get a bit toasty and this is perfect for internet surfing and whatnot on the couch. also works with my work 15" powerbook. they have a larger size that would work for your 17" too. they're not very pretty, but quite functional.

iLap maybe?:)

I concur. iLap is a gift of the gods.

But how is with your legs crossed, Indian-style? It look great if you're sitting with your legs are straight together, but I'm antsy, so I move and shift and change positions quite a bit.
I have heard of the iLap, and it does sound good though.

Lighted Lapdesk from Brookstone

New member, 1st post iirc, so I thought I'd share that item above. My Wife and I popped into a Brookstone earlier tonight on the way to the Apple Store here in Las Vegas and I saw that sitting up on the shelf. The underside of it is made of a foam memory-like material (think Tempur-Pedic mattresses) and covered with a suede style stretchable fabric.

For the price it's absolutely amazing considering all the stuff you get. The light is battery powered and comes in handy at times. The lid lifts up and allows you to store some goodies or items in.

I like the look of the iLap but, I just can't see myself paying that much money for a sheet of aluminum with some foam covered rolls - but that's just me, mind you.

It seems like it would help with keeping the MacBooks pretty cool, but I'd say one thing that would dramatically help the iLap with laptop cooling would be mounting some simple rubber feet on the upper surface; doing this would allow the laptop to rest physically above the surface instead of flat against it.

This would increase airflow completely around the MacBook (or whatever laptop you happen to have on it) and still maintain the stability. Obviously, putting some rubber feet (4 should suffice, in the corners of the laptop or just inside the corners) would help in many ways, both for airflow and keeping the laptop from possibly sliding clean off the iLap surface.

(btw, those tips about the rubber feet were something I just thought of and would consider doing if I got a great price on an iLap someplace)

When I purchase my MBP sometime in the next few weeks, I'm getting one of these for utmost comfort when I decide to use the MBP in bed or relaxed on whatever I happen to be lying on. :)

I personally use a foofbag as well, though I got to admit the Lapinator seems to does what it is supposed to do..

Do you need a Lapinator Plus for a 15" MBP?

Edit: the regular seems to be only 11", isn't that a bit too small?

I've seen that one before, and I'm leaning towards something like it, because as I said above, I need something that will move fairly easily with me. It does look like heat disipation would be a problem with it, but I could always jury-rig something for that. I'll have to go to my local brookstone to give it a try.

Thanks for your informative first post.

Yeah, and I'm getting the 17" so it's probably a moot point anyway. I like the idea of it, but I just don't think the iLap is going to work for a person as fidgety as me even if they built one that would work with a 17" mbp.

For what it is worth, Lapinator's lousy website seems to inspire confidence that it can actually protect your... erm... testicles!

Seems like it is made of some real good heat proof material, or at least appears to be :p

Testimonial on Lapinator website:
"Thanks for the quick shipping! My husband will love this! April Horn"

Sounds like she'll be enjoying it too...
