Does anyone know of any Mac emulators that run under OS X? I have some old OS 9 games that I'd like to run, but I can't run OS 9 on my G5.

I tried SheepShaver but couldn't get it to work ("FATAL: sc->regs->gpr[2] in signal handler (000003cc) doesn't have expected value (affebad5)
Maybe you need a different kernel?").

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks :)

Thanks, I'll give it a go :)

Edit: Oh, if you're not running Tiger. Misread your post :(

A surprising number of old games work in Classic, but not all, particularly very old ones that directly accessed hardware or relied on OS quirks that weren't supported in OS8 or 9.

And, for those, have a look at the marvelous Emulation.net (which isn't at emulation.net anymore) Macintosh emulator section:

http://emulation.victoly.com/macintosh/

I've used a couple of the programs listed there to run 6.0 for some seriously old school games.

Which games? Anyway, you can run OS 9 via Classic on a G5.

Classic works for some, but not others. And 6.0 isn't an option either, eg. Zork Grand Inquisitor requires a G3 and at least OS 8.6.

Like I said, have a look--I only used 6.0 as an example, but several of those emulators should run any old-school OS--I also ran 7.0 and 7.5 in goofing around. I assume some also offer either emulated or direct PPC support, which should cover 8.6 on a G3 requirements on a modern Mac.

Most of them only seem to emulate a 68040. SheepShaver and Mac-on-Mac are the only ones I can find that emulate a PPC, but I can't get SheepShaver working, and Mac-on-Mac doesn't support Tiger :(

Zork Grand Inquisitor does not work on Classic, or OS X (later than 10.2.8), or Sheepshaver, or MacOnLinux (the Mac version of that being MacOnMac). It starts on at least two of those, but absolutely nothing will move the mouse cursor. It responds to keyboard commands, but something with mouse input is borked on any sort of emulation, thus making it unplayable. Alas. I think the only realistic solution is to boot into 10.2, but I don't have a copy of that.

Tell me what other games you want to run, and maybe I can tell you what they work on if at all.

Gah!

ZGI was the main one, I think all the others will run in Classic (although I don't like Classic and don't really want to install it on my shiny new G5 :()

Oh, feh, it's just an emulator and isn't any different from installing either of the other emulators you were going to install.... It's generally better/more convenient than SheepShaver and MacOnLinux for most things right now, though there are some games that run on SS or MOL that don't run on Classic.
