Right now, CF is my primary storage medium. My main cameras use CF(Nikon D800 and D810) and the SD card rarely comes out of them. I do use SD in my Df as that's all I get, but otherwise I'm currently primarily CF.

I've been using the Lexar "popup" USB 3 CF/SD reader for a while, and have no reason to dislike it and it's meeting my needs just fine. I also have SD options for my various computers, including the nice OWC dock I just bought for desktop use with my MBP, and some older MBPs still in use that have built in readers.

I had a Nikon D500 for a while, since sold, and I had a couple of XQD cards for it. At the time, I had "the" reader, the one that AFAIK was one of the few if not the only on the market, the Sony XQD/SD reader(not the II version). I had no complaints about it.

With that said, I'm dragging my feet now on getting a D850, and with that is going to come jumping back into the XQD/CFExpress fold(I haven't kept pace with CFExpress in the older Nikons-I seem to recall at least initially it was buggy and I didn't rush to buy any cards for my D500). I sold my XQD cards and reader when I got rid of the D500, so I'm starting from scratch, and even if I only use XQDs for now it seems silly to not get a reader that can handle CFExpress.

Ideally I'd like a USB 3 or USB-C reader that can handle all three card types-CF, XQD/CFExpress, and SD. Does such a unicorn exist, or am I resigned to needing two readers when I get back into XQDs?

i have this reader. it is xqd (not cfe) but does also include sd.

not unicorn for you but perhaps helps?

Thanks, but it looks like that leaves out CF.

It's looking like I may have to resign to two readers...

ohh. yes. i have a separate cf reader for my d700 that i have to use two adapters strung together. 🙄

Edit: man, I did some searching and it appears it’s the XQD cards that make it hard to find one that works for everything. I’m not terribly familiar with that card format, but it seems like you get CF or XQD, but not both.

Thanks guys...looks like two is the choice.

I'll shop for a CFExpress reader-I can't bring myself to buy another that only does XQD even if I won't necessarily use it immediately.

I have all three formats floating around (sd, CF, XQD/CFExpress), 2 readers. No unicorn that I‘ve been able to find but would sure love one :).
The other unicorn I would like is a USB C hub. I am getting more devices that would benefit from consolidation onto USB C connections but I cannot find a decent hub with multiple USB-C data ports.

Depending on how much you want to spend, OWC has a dock with intermittent availability that has 4x TB4 ports including on PD port, so you can plug and charge on one and have 3 more ports.

I JUST got an OWC dock that has a USB-C port in addition to its 2x TB3 ports. That gives me 3 "empty" in theory with the unused one on my computer, the other TB3 port on the dock, and the separate USB-C.
