I'm running into some software that will no longer run on my old iMac. Right now I'm considering a 2017 2.3ghz dual core i5. I don't have any heavy duty processor or graphics requirements but am concerned with Apple getting away from Intel chips and my "new" machine also becoming obsolete. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

What software won’t run? Is it that software requires a later OS than your old iMac can run, or have you upgraded to a new OS and the software is 32-bit? What model/spec is your old iMac?

All machines will become obsolete at some point, but you’ll bring that date forward hugely if you buy the bottom-of-the-range 21.5” non-retina, dual-core 7th gen i5 iMac, as it was almost too slow/obsolete when it was launched 😟

Please dont say it’s also got the 1TB HDD

How much is this newer iMac being sold for, as it was only $/€/£999 when new (Apple are even still selling it as the entry-level model, but at least it now has a small SSD as standard)

Thanks for the reply. The app requires Mojave at a minimum and I'm running High Sierra.

The one I'm considering has an intel iris plus graphics 640. I assume this is NOT a Retina display.
It's selling for $700 US and has 1 year of AppleCare remaining.

i used it before and not retina and broken, i suggest you get the mac mini instead because of dongle mess issue.

Then why not just upgrade your iMac OSX to Mojave / Catalina with DosDude1's Mojave or Catalina Patcher?
Your iMac runs slower because your GPU doesn't support Metal but still the system is still responsive enough for daily chores except for stuttering in playing videos. No gaming. I did that for quite some time before I changed its GPU lately.

I don't know what app you are clinging onto and how GPU or CPU intensive your app requires.
You may just change your GPU to a K2100 or WX4130 (~$75) with Mac vBIOS flashing and off to go in the new OSX in full capacity.

Never heard of DosDude1's Patcher. Interesting. I just finished looking at some deals on the web and decided to buy a new model. Thanks for all the feedback & help.

I have/still have a 2011 iMac and recently purchased a 2017 iMac with *GB RAM and a slow 1TB internal drive. I am currently running Big Sur off an external 500GB SSD and it runs like a dream.
