Right now i have a trusty old 1TB HD in my mid-2011 27" imac. It's time to upgrade to an SSD.
I figure i might as well buy an ADDITIONAL drive rather than just replace the old one, so then i can use one drive for my samples and sound libraries, and use the other one to boot up from and run the software/plugins etc. I hear that in the 2011 imacs you can put an additional internal hard drive in the optical drive section if you're happy to sacrifice your CD/DVD drive (easy sacrifice in today's era).
Thinking 500gb SSD (money is tight). That's an adequate amount, right?
With that in mind (using the extra hard drive for audio purposes), which is the most optimum option?
1. Insert additional internal SSD -- Use that as the startup disk -- Use the old HD as sample storage.
2. Insert additional internal SSD -- Use that as the sample storage -- Use the old HD as startup disk.
I don't have the expertise or tools to necessarily replace the drive myself, i believe i will be able to figure it out via youtube videos, but to save myself the $45 to buy the tools + the risk of doing it myself i could run the SSD from my THUNDERBLOT port (2011 imacs have 2). Is that an equally viable option? Or would i lose out on performance if i did that instead of installing it internally?
Also, hypothetically if i run the SSD through thunderbolt, would it be better to use the SSD as the startup disk or use it as the sample storage disk?
One more question. Which upgrade would benefit the performance of my DAW more: Upgrading to SSD, or installing more RAM? (currently i only have 8gb RAM). Obviously i need to upgrade both, but budget can only allow one option for now. I'm mostly hoping to increase CPU resources to eliminate the "system overload" error in Logic Pro X.
I've been using a regular HD (non-SSD) for all of my life, i am completely new to the concept of SSD drives + using multiple drives in tandem. Please let me know information that a noob would need to know and i will be able to create a strategy within my budget.
Cheers!
