I am looking for an alternative to Default Folder X. That app has several functions, and frankly, is overkill for what I want. I just need to be able to set a default folder for saving downloads, etc. As the latest Default Folder X is currently on sale for $20, I want something that does this deed and costs less that $20.

Safari has a setting for specifying the downloads folder to use... Settings > General > File download location

Curious, what features are exactly implied by ", etc" ?

Thinks like creating and modifying files (Photoshop, MS Office suite, FCP... macOS and these programs tend to save files to the last folder that I access, even for other things... and I spend a fair amount of time searching for the files that I just saved.

If I understand you correctly, you want to be able to set a specific folder for each of those apps you work with so you can easily find your saved work. Is that correct ?

Ideally, yes... and failing that, I'd settle for selecting a fixed location for all saved work (maybe a "work" folder on the desktop...

If I were in your workflow, I would create a folder for each app in the Finder side bar titled"app name.saved" . I would then go to each app and change the default saved work location to the appropriate folder you just created. That should make your workflow much smoother and faster.

Having a destination folder on the sidebar in Finder does nothing to resolve this situation... Finder is not in control of where files get saved from application Save or Save As dialogs...

Seems like a somewhat esoteric tool. If it is something that is useful to you on a daily basis, perhaps $20 isn’t a bad deal. I’m old enough to remember when we expected to pay quite a bit more than that for software.

MOST applications have a user changeable "default" saving folder. For example, in Safari, you can go to Safari [in the menu bar] / Settings/ General and change the download folder to whatever folder you want.

For Microsoft Word/ Office, click on Microsoft Word [in the menu bar]/ Preferences/ File Location and change the location of the files.

It's been a long time since I used Photoshop for the Mac, but I know you can change the various default folders.

For Final Cut Pro, flick on File/ Library Properties, and the Library Properties should open on the right hand side. Under Storage Location, click Modify Settings, and change the settings.

Don't forget to make the folders first in Finder, if they don't already exist.

There is no substitute for Default Folder X. The problem is, DFX does so many little things along with its main functionality that you probably need a half dozen or more other utilities to do the same thing.

I happily paid full price for new versions for years instead of taking advantage of the upgrade discounts just to do my part in keeping the developer interested in adding new features and functionality.

We probably all have an app we say we can't live without... DFX is mine.
