A coworker's son is starting med school and would like an iPad. A Pro would be too big. So the choices are the iPad and the iPad Air. He plans to use the Pencil too. I only use the iPad Mini so I'm not familiar with the nuances of the regular iPads. His dad is looking for reliability and compatibility with peripherals. What would you suggest?

Size wise a 11 inch iPad Pro and the iPad Air , iPad are all around the same size . There is also the 10.5 iPad Pro which is the same size as the Air . All iPads have pretty good support with accessories

Thanks. I just replied to him with your information.

There is rumors of an updated iPad increasing to 10.2 and rumors of a new iPad Pro. I think the iPad 10.2 has more of a chance of a September announcement. The rumors of the new pros mostly consist of just new cameras basically .

I think that he's starting either now or very soon and he probably can't wait until Apple's fall launch.

Loving my iPad Air + Pencil. But if you can afford it, I'd recommend the iPad Pro with Pencil 2. (I couldn't afford it). :p

I have to chime in and recommend the 11" Pro. But keep in mind, the new design of the 12.9" Pro is almost exactly the size of a piece of printer paper. Not a big deal to carry around at all.

11” Pro with Smart Keyboard Folio and Pencil 2 (or perhaps Crayon). Consider getting the new 2019 Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter with USB 3 + HDMI.

If on a budget then 10.5” Air with Smart Keyboard Folio and Pencil or Crayon. This is workable but USB support is a pain. Requires Lightning to USB 3 adapter and external power, and you only get USB 2 speeds.

Buy at education pricing and in certain countries get free Beats wireless headphones.

10.5” Pro is nicer than the 10.5” Air and supports USB 3 speed, but it’s discontinued and no free headphones. It also doesn’t support Crayon.

The 12.9” is very nice too but is quite big.
