I understand that pictures taken are pushed to all my devices automatically. So, pictures on the photo stream do not count against my free 5GB of storage? Also, are these pictures stored online? If so, that would be amazing in terms of backing up photos. I guess that's the whole point of iCloud?

As stated in the keynote, they do not count towards storage.

you cannot access them in a gallery online. At least not yet. They're available on your iOS devices, Apple TV (if set up) and Mac or Windows computers (again, if set up).

As above not stored online as such, but anything you take/save/import on iPod/iPhone/iPod (I'm going to break my / key at this rate) will get uploaded to iCloud when you get onto wifi, and then downloaded from iCloud to iPhoto leaving a permanent backup on your mac. Chuck in some other backup such as time machine and your pics are going to be a lot safer
