I have a MacBook from 2015 with AMD graphics, and I want to use a tool to convert videos that utilizes GPU acceleration. On Windows, I use HandBrake, but the macOS version of this tool doesn't support GPU encoding on such an old machine, as I understood. I'm sure my MacBook is capable of converting to H.264 using the GPU, but for some reason, this feature isn’t available in HandBrake.

Additionally, while I'm here, I’d like to ask about the Apple VT H.264 Hardware Encoder. Do you have any insights into how it works?

The hardware encoders & decoders aren't counted as GPU utilisation.

The GPU is used to render the frames, not to encode them to H.264 or HEVC.

HandBrake supports the hardware encoder on your machine, but it doesn't support the hardware decoders and running filters on the GPU. For that you need macOS 13.

Anyway, the CPU usage to decode is quite low, and if you disable all the filters it won't use too much CPU.

Guys, thank you so much! You've all been super helpful. Now I know the right software and understand how encoding works on macOS. I'm definitely a newbie to this, so your help was invaluable!
