Hi,

Recently moved from PC to Mac. On PC, for many years I’ve used the wretched iTunes only to backup my iPad and iPhone and to be fair it’s always been OK including when transferring to newer devices.

I’ve wanted to break away from iTunes for ages. I’ve screwed up the iTunes on Mojave by fiddling around trying to point it at NAS.

I observe several apps that claim robust backup and restore (and migration) And some can utilise external storage so looking for recommendations.

I’ll add that I don’t really want to go back to iTunes if that were an option in the new split apps or Catalina. I also don’t want to pay monthly for iCloud expansion.

Thanks in advance for any info/advice/opinions.

I use iMazing. Never been the biggest fan of iTunes for backups. Did use it for a while but needed more. iMazing does a great job for me. From transferring old backups to a new phone or iPad to exporting files and such to my NAS. Been using it for over 2 years and it is reliable. Regular updates to the app. Also wifi backups done every day of my devices. Hope this helps you in your search for something new.

Thanks a lot for the recommendation on iMazing 2.
Just installed the free version and backed up my iphone and ipad.
Seems like a very useful and capable utility.

It seems, though, that should I need to restore a device, I'll be forced to buy the full version. Well, OK...

Just out of curiosity, if you only need to backup-restore you devices, why are you willing to pay for a third-party app and not use the free one made by Apple?

It works over wifi, and it has a lot of fuctionality other than backup, even with the free version, and it looks very streamlined. But, I have yet to explore everything it can do. You'll have to check it out yourself: iMazing
And it's not very expensive, I think.

For me personally, I looked at Apple Configurator 2, read the reviews and saw a few problems. Given my nightmares with iTunes, I didn't fancy it at all and thought £27 was a small price for a mature application which has a robust backup/restore and lots of other features too. And I can firmly declare no affiliation or link with the company. Good reliable software deserves reward and it's a personal choice I guess.

I'm not affiliated with iMazing either. I answered a question for the op. Not sure where your assumptions come from. My conversation to this thread is now finished.

I consider posting hidden affiliate links to be disrespectful. You are trying to help yourself while pretending the help others.
Getting back to topic, backup and restore from backup requires just a right click in Apple Configurator 2.

About iMazing, I dislike the dubious practice of installing a launch agent without user consent or knowledge.
I'm referring to ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.DigiDNA.iMazing2Mac.Mini.plist
That being said, I wish everyone a good day and to enjoy their new purchase.

Cause this is a clever DigiDNA advert campain.
Of course, 99.9% of Apple users use iCloud. If you want to save money, you can store your photo library somewhere else. I do the same. But organizing all the other data and apps beyond the iCloud is a nightmare that only beginners go into.
