Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find a Mac app or method to automatically sort downloaded files into specific folders based on file typeand/or source website.

Examples of what I'd like to do:

  • Downloads from abc.com → ~/Downloads/abc
  • Any PDF file → ~/Downloads/PDFs
  • PDF files from def.com → ~/Downloads/def-pdf
I expected this to be a pretty standard download-manager feature, but I haven't found anything on the Mac App Store (or elsewhere) that handles both site-based and file-type-based routing cleanly.

I prefer a dedicated download manager (one browser is fine — doesn't need to be multi-browser), and I'd rather avoid heavy scripting if possible — but I'm open to paid tools like Hazel or other utilities if that's the best path.

Has anyone solved this on macOS?
Any download managers, apps, or workflows you'd recommend?

Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction!

This would be a perfect use for Folder Actions. There are web resources that can guide you while setting it up. It isn’t hard.

Progressive Downloader is free and can do that.

"Groups help you sort downloaded files. Each group may have:
a special folder to store downloaded files."
"Regular Expressions
If regular expression or regex mean something to you, you can apply your knowledge here. Instead of file types, you may use a regular expression to apply it to a download address. "
