The above monitor also has optical input.

However, given that I would like to hook up a Wii to this monitor, I'm not sure that it is the best choice. If I want to hook up a Wii, possibly a PS3 and my iMac to a monitor, which would you recommend? I'm looking for something closer to, but preferably under, 300 dollars. Built-in speakers would be ideal but, if not, some sort of optical output so I could connect it to other speakers...

Im not someone who should answer this question but i really do like that samsung, Dell also has some nice units on their site that i had been looking at.

This has hardly to do anything with iMac, and this is an iMac forum.

However I can tell you you need VGA input, HDMI input and DVI input.
You need VGA for the Wii (and get yourself a VGA cable for Wii), HDMI for the PS3 and DVI for the iMac, for which you need a mini-displayport to DVI adapter (note: the Apple mini-displayport to DVI adapter max output resolution is 1920x1200)

Just use the Newegg site or something equal to search for monitors which have VGA, HDMI and DVI input, are not more expensive then 300 dollars, are 23" and wathever else you want. When you have a selection search on Google for reviews... then you'll know which you want/need.

you are going to connect your imac and wii to a 23inch screen? why? ...

why not use hdmi to mdp converter like kanex, belkin etc to hook up wii to imac ?

Don't need HDMI input for the PS3 unless the OP wants a monitor with speakers. DVI = HDMI - audio channels.

At this point, it would be good to know how the OP plans to have audio coming out of the systems. If he plans on plugging the PS3 into a receiver box using the optical connection then that covers the sound issue. The Wii doesn't help either - it's very limited in its outputs. It's pretty much an analog system. A monitor with optical output isn't going to help much unless the monitor is active in encoding audio input into a digital output rather than a simple passthru - this would really raise the price of the monitor.

This then raises the question of why does that monitor have optical input if it has no speakers? :p Although I imagine that monitor has a speaker add-on that you can buy.

Anyway - spec wise, that monitor seems fine. I'd suggest looking for reviews on it in terms of how it reproduces colours. That's the only thing worth looking into yourself and see if you're happy with what other people say about it in formal reviews.
