I suggest looking at the Sigma 70mm F/2.8 EX DG Macro. Really sharp focus even wide open. Price is about $500 give or take.
What about the image quality of your Canon 50mm f/1.8 do you not like? I thought it was a great lens when I had it. The f/1.4 is nice too, and it runs about $350.
Since you're on full frame, you might even check out the 100mm macro. It works very well as a portrait lens and does wonders with macro photography!

I would imagine since you are using a full frame camera that the Tamron would not be long enough for portrait? I would look for something between 85mm and 135mm. 100mm f/2 is a great lens that fits your budget (430$ new on Amazon), also 100mm f/2.8 macro (520$ new on Amazon).

You will have to get an adapter and manual focus, but it will be very hard to beat the Zeiss/Contax 85mm f1.4 at any price. Do a search and you will not find a bad thing about it. In fact, people compare or rate it better than the Canon 85mm f1.2L which runs about 2-3 times the price. I bought a Sony just to use the AF version. I love it. KEH has the manual versions for around $600.00.

I'd wait until the Sigma 85mm 1.4 is out and see what the reviews say, the Sigma 50mm is a fantastic lens and optimized to shoot wide open. I'd imagine that Sigma will optimize the design of the 85mm the same way. Could be very nice indeed.
How about saving around $300.00 more and buying a 135mm f/2L?

Haven't used that lens, but this is probably good advice. AF is an important feature for most all photographers.
I second the 100 focal length for FF.
I have the 100L and it replaced my 85 and my Sigma 150 macro.
