My only frustration with the iPhone is the lack of ability to customize the "text message received" sound with clips from my own collection.

I believe that the only way to modify these sounds is through SSH, which requires jailbreaking my iPhone. However, I'm worried that jailbreaking my iPhone will compromise my ability to develop and distribute apps in Apple's iPhone Developer Program.

1) I would like to avoid the problem if possible. Are there any non-jailbreaking paths I can take to modify the sound files?
2) If not, could I perhaps jailbreak my phone, modify the sound files, then revert to a non-jailbroken state with the modified sound files in tact?
3) If not, can I participate in the Apple Developer Program with a jailbroken iPhone?

Minimum needed: Jailbreak, install Cydia & OpenSSH. Then replace between 1 and 6 message tones using SSH.

this was pretty much the only reason why i jailbroke my 3G.

this is such a fundamentally basic customization option, how on earth they keep omitting it from updates is beyond me.

I mean, theyve updated and added many complex features (cut copy paste ect) how is it they leave txt and alert customization out?

its like they're just doing it on purpose?!

very annoying. I feel your pain brother...
