Im looking to buy a new Imac in the coming weeks. But I need a little help deciding on which one to get.

I know I want to get a 20inch but should I go refurbished? or buy brand new?

This computer is gonna be used by 3 people mostly just for using the web and music and some imovie stuff.

Also should I wait for a new one? and how long do you think ill have to wait?:apple:

I would wait for the new one or buy refurbished. They have some good deals on refurbs right now (some of the MacBook Airs are ridiculously priced). I personally would wait for the new nvidia graphics and the possibility of a quad-core CPU. If you like a matte option, that might also be available with the new model since the 17" MacBook Pro brought it back (for $50).

Im mostly looking at the desktop version right now. I dont really need a macbook but thanks for the quick reply

The new iMacs are coming soon, we just don't know how soon. Their main advantage is likely to be in the Graphics department with the new NVIDIA chipset, which will be really good for speed once Snow Leopard hits. They also will have LED screens and the new MiniDisplay Port.

Other than that, the usual minor Ram, Hard Drive, and Processor bump will be there as well.

I personally would wait, as you would be paying for slightly outdated hardware right now, especially when one is so soon to be released.

It seems that Feb/March is the expected time frame.

As for the refurbs, I have never had one, but I have never heard anyone on here talk bad about them. They are great if you're looking to save a few bucks.

As for your needs, the current models or refurbs are more than fast enough, but who knows what you'll be doing a year or two from now. The new models will simply last longer. Always something to consider.

If you don't need it right now, wait.

There are lots of good things in new iMacs (DDR3 RAM, better CPUs and GPUs, maybe option of quad-core, LED display etc...)

Simply you just get more for your money with new ones.

so all of u are telling me to wait.

What is everyones opinion on when they'll update the imac?

I say screw waiting. I waited all december for an update that was going to happen at macworld, and when macworld rolled around and behold: nothing happened, I ordered mine then and there. The forums always say to wait. Maybe this summer there'll be an update in iMacs, but I didn't want to wait anymore.

If you can buy now and you want it now, just do it.

I have been waiting too, & to be honest it is just feels like a waste of time right now. I am actually going to pick up a 24" 2.8ghz this weekend.

If a new one comes out within 15 days, then I will return for the new one. If they don't then no big deal. At lease when you buy the model now you will be getting a machine that is working at its best now with very few bugs to it. Where the new iMac might have a few problems that you will have to deal with.

So basically do whatever your gut is telling you to do.

Also been waiting to, had the same idea in mind. Ordered last night.

I've waited new ones for 8 months and I'm not going to buy existing model.

Propably in next months or so, there was evidence that Mini comes in beginning of March and they have been updated hand in hand few times.

They'll come before Snow Leopard that's sure.

impatience is not a virtue. we are not talking 6 months here. maybe a month, maybe 2. how are you going to feel if you miss it by a few weeks? i would agree, refurb to save money now or wait though.

Just buy now, new imacs not out till summer, when snow leopard comes out

New ones comes before SL that's sure. Just think, if you buy new iMac when they come before SL, many people will buy SL too when it comes. So it's 130e more for Apple, and we don't know when SL comes, maybe before summer, maybe for christmas sales

I bought my iMac last night. I honestly will not care that much, either way I have a killer machine that the whole family loves.

I agree...if you need it, buy it. I used my Windows machine until it's last legs. I was originally going to buy in October, but at that time everyone said new iMac's should be coming out in November or December...then nothing. Waited until MacWorld..nothing. Day after MacWorld I needed a computer so I bought it, and have not regretted it. If you need it go ahead and buy it. You don't have to listen to everyone here telling you to wait. There's nothing wrong with these machines at all. Yeah, they are pricey for outdated hardware, but I didn't care. I was just excited to finally get rid of my Windows machine.
