Like the title says my significant other and I are looking into buying a MacBook Pro. It'll be my first MacBook on 10 years. I last bought a 2010 model in 2010, it has finally been retired. We went looking at Best Buy last night and was pricing them. It's been awhile since I've owned an Apple product (three years since I last owned an iPhone) I haven't followed the keynotes since. Should we wait to buy a new MacBook Pro when the new 2020 models come out? Or will it be ok to get the 2019 model?

Best advice I can give:

Do not, repeat, DO NOT buy the current 13" MacBook Pro. It has the old, fatally-flawed "butterfly" keyboard that has a very high chance of failing.

If you want the "smaller sized" MBP, hold out a few more months. There will be a 2020 13" (or possibly slightly larger display, 14") that gets released by June, perhaps earlier. It will have the new "scissors" keyboard that should be far more reliable for the life of the computer.

If you want the "larger-sized" MacBook Pro, the 16" model (NOT the 15") has the new scissors keyboard.
So that one IS "a buy"...

My advice: Only buy the 16" Macbook Pro. The butterfly keys are terriable. I imagine the other computers would have those keyboards swapped out son in the newer models.

It's been so long since I've followed Apple news but would you care to enlighten me as to what this butterfly keyboard flaw is? Thanks.

The 16" MacBook Pro is the one to get if you want one now. If you want a smaller machine I'd wait TBH.

The "butterfly" keyboard was used in MacBook Pros from 2016 up through 2019.
The ONLY MBP that DOES NOT HAVE the butterfly keyboard is the recently-released 16" model. That has the new, improved scissors keyboard.

The butterfly keyboard was a total design failure from the moment it was released. One of the worst design mistakes Apple has ever made (I sense this is one reason Jony Ive is no longer with Apple).
The keys will stick and fail, and the only "fix" is to replace THE ENTIRE TOP CASE OF THE COMPUTER.
This costs around $700 out-of-warranty.
Apple "extended" the warranty on the keyboards to 4 years from date-of-initial-purchase, but after that, the user pays.

You DO NOT WANT a MacBook Pro that has a butterfly keyboard!

Not all butterfly keyboards fail.

My 2015 Macbook Retina 12" has the very first gen butterfly keyboard which is still going strong after 5 years...
