Hey all. I'm thinking about buying a white MacBook 1.86 but I'm a little worried. I have been hearing a lot about the buzzing sound coming from them just like with the MPB. I was messing with a few black macbooks in the apple store and noticed the sound on them but not as loud as on the MPB. Can some people with white 1.86 model macbooks tell me of any problems they have had? Your input would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

I listened to all of the MacBooks at the Keystone store and I coouldn't find any buzz. If there was a buzz I took it as the general hum of a laptop computer.

I've got a 2.0ghz white model, so perhaps my opinion is moot, but I've noticed a faint mooing only when the computer gets very hot (which tends to happen if I'm using it on a blanket or pillow or something that might inhibit the cooling). The 'Moo' is just a regular spinning up and spinning down of the built-in fans...rather than running at full tilt they go in bursts. The mooing disappears if I tip the computer forward slightly to allow heat to better escape from the vents.

Otherwise, it's been grand.

My ears buzz regardless (tinitus), I'd be more concerned with heat issues.

Thanks for the replies so far... I may have to make a trip up to Keystone... wallet in hand I'm sure haha. I appreciate the comments and keep them coming. It is nice to hear good things about a product from time to time as well since you always hear so much bad.

1.83 GHz MacBook, no whine, no mooing, no plastic tape left on, bearably warm underneath, wrist area no warmer than ambient temperature (that I notice anyway).

Power supply buzzed during battery charge during calibration, but nothing since then.

I bought a 1.83 on Sunday. It worked great for a few hours, no whine, heat or mooing. Then it went bad. It got so hot it kept shutting down. It moo'ed like crazy. I took it back yesterday and got another 1.83. This one vibrated. It was like the HD was spinning full blast all the time. Even the top case vibrated. I took it back today. The manager of my local Apple store tried to convince me the vibration was normal even pointing out that the 3 floor models were vibrating but I kept insisting on a refund. He finally offered to exhcange it so I have another 1.83 but it's still sealed and I'm seriously considering taking it back to a diffent Apple store. 2 bad MBs in a row?? Not too promising. :( I'm so bummed. I sold my iBook G4 and everything for this MB.

Same exactly here no buzzing mooing etc not any hotter than a iBook G4....My Charger also buzzed during the battery calibration charge but fine since.....
The build quality is great and it is very very fast!

I have the Black MacBook.

General impressions:

1. The bottom gets hot. So does the left side of the top. But the keyboard and palm rests do not, so I don't mind.

2. I get a rare moo when I am working the Mac hard. Otherwise, it's silent.

But, even as a demanding Mac guy, I have zero regrets. The speed difference compared with my last generation 17" PowerBook is staggering. The MacBook leaves it in the dust (and costs 2 grand less.)

And the screen. Oh, the screen. It makes the 17" look like a Dell POS.

Did everyone here remove the tape over the exhaust vent if there was any? :D

No tape.

In fact, no issues at all. I have had three. First they gave me a 1.83 by mistake. Next I got a white 2.0, and it did seem to get dirty on the keyboard deck too easily, so I opted for the black. None of the three machines displayed ANY issues. I am really surpised that 30% are saying that they have issues with their MacBooks. In my experience, these are amazing machines. Not hot (warm under the left hand corner, but far from hot) and dead quiet. The best notebook I have ever used. Previosuly, I had been a Vaio user. I doubt that I will ever go back, and I will certainly never regret purchasing my MacBook. A solid 10.

You're gonna have trouble finding a 1.86 GHz MacBook, but I can only say: GO FOR IT! My MacBook (see sig), has only dones good things. No moo, no buzz, no plastic, no heat, no whine, no falling apart. Nothing but good stuff. Get yourself a MB!;)

Thanks for all the replies everyone! It is good to see there are people out there not having problems. I talked to my employer today and they are ordering me a Dell Latitude D620 to take home with me and bring to work grrrrr! BUT, I went to the Apple store last night and ended up walking out with a Core Duo Mini to go with my 20" Dell Widescreen. I will think about getting an Apple laptop later down the road, but for now my mini and my work computer will do.

By the way, I'm lovin' the mini. It is much faster than ANY of the previous macs I have owned.... almost all were G4 based laptops tho haha. Now if only my employer would buy me a macbook and let me dual boot.. sigh.
