Dear People:
Losing or breaking a cell phone is the number one consumer complaint. Why? Because it happens all the time. Cell phones break and they get lost or stolen.

99 out of 100 cellular telephones (including Blackberrry, Kyocera and Palm smart phones) all offer insurance; if you lose the phone, you pay a small deductible ($25-$50.00)and a replacement phone is sent to you. But not the IPhone. If you lose the IPhone, there is no insurance program offered by Apple to either replace it, or help allay the cost.

Four months ago, I purchased a 3GS 32G from AT&T for $299.00; plus tax, plus case. I even purchased an additional Care and Protection Plan for $100.00 more. Unfortunately, last week i lost my IPhone. I searched high and low, but could not find it. I contacted AT&T about a replacement IPhone, but now the new price is $500.00; plus I also have to SIGN A NEW TWO YEAR CONTRACT. If I do not sign the contract, then I will have to pay full ertail price of $700.00. I asked the clerk what was difference between them and the Mob? I truly feel I was being extorted. I had to now pay $500.00 and sign a new contract too? That really irked me. (In my opinion, all they were missing was a gun and a mask).

What I also found troubling was that although I had Location Services on, two, different GPS Program, my IED number; as well as Google Maps, etc., no one; neither AT&T nor Apple would help find my IPhone; and they could have done it quite easily. Apparently, I didn;t purchase Apple's additional program called Mobile Me for another $100.00. (I had no use for this Mobile Me program--it was designed for people on the road; although one of its option was a phone location service--which itself has limitations). Therefore, no one at Apple or AT&T would help me; so I was out of luck.

If you ask AT&T about it, they blame Apple and told me that Apple would not allow AT&t to insure the IPhones. Even though a comprable phone like a Palm or Blackberry is equivalent to an IPhone in price. If I had a Blackberry, I would have simply paid a small deductible ($50.00) and I would have been sent another unit. I even called Apple and asked why they did not offer some insurance program on the IPhone, but the young lady had no answer. She asked me if I had a Home Owner's Policy (which I do; Homeowners, Business Insurance, AMEX Protection Plan and not a one can help me).

So now, in order to replace my lost IPhone, I have to pay $500.00, but I refuse. It is not the money, but having to sign a new contract seems like kicking someone when they are down. I cannot give AT&T the satisfaction. Therefore, I am going to simply cancel my business account with AT&T and simply pay the $175.00 cancellation fee. And if I decide on another IPhone, I will get it under my name for $299.00 (and maybe cheaper after Christmas; who knows). This way I will at least save $26.00; while concomitantly not giving those bastards the satisfaction of compelling me to re-sign a contract that I had just signed less than six months earlier; no way. That is bad business.

In conclusion, I was able to locate Steven Jobs apparent email address, and sent him an email regarding this matter, but to date no response. I will keep you posted. So don't lose your precious IPhone; don't break it either. If you do, you will pay. Can you imagine paying over $300 for the phone four months ago, and now having to pay at least $500 a week before Christmas. What a bummer.

Happy Holidays All.

It does suck, yes. I bought a SquareTrade contract for my iPhone since they seemed to be the best for the money and it did pay off once when I had water damage. They actually creditted my paypal account for the full amount of a new iPhone, minus the $50 deductable. On the other hand, I could get AT&T insurance for my Fuze and I'd bet that if I get an Expo tomorrow, I can get insurance for that, also. I suppose what it really means is that AT&T and Apple expected iPhones to be sold in droves to people who are "less than professional" and figured they'd capitalize on it.

Which is why I have MobileMe. Find My iPhone comes in handy in situations like this. Also, the insurance thingy isn't something hidden. It has been a well known fact ever since Day 1 with the 1st Gen iPhone.

I agree with the thoughts above. If you do your research what will be revealed to you will be that this is a common problem and there are a couple of solutions that can help with the problem. First is to buy with a credit card that gives you additional protection. Secondly, buy SquareTrade or another third-party warranty. The fact is that Apple is not going to get involved with the business of replacing broken or lost phones, it just doesn't make sense for them.

I agree that that sucks and they should have some sort of insurance program. Loosing an iphone is also a lot different from breaking it though. If you break it you can turn it in and get a new one for $200 without signing a contract.

I dropped my 3g phone about 3 weeks ago and the glass and lcd cracked into a hundreds of pieces. the phone was over a year old and i had no apple care. i brought it to the apple store and they offered a replacement for $200 without needing a contract. still a chunk of money, but no where near as bad as 500.

I think it's sad and thy should have insurance but then again as others have stated, this is a known fact.

I went to the jewelry store and bought a $300 pocket watch. On the way home, it must have fallen out of my pocket. I couldn't find it anywhere. I went back to the jewelry store and was appalled when they would do nothing to help me find it and they would not replace the watch at a huge discount.

Can you imagine????

No kidding! Or an iPod Touch or anything else of value. If you can find someone who wants to insure it, great! If not, you have to make the decision as to whether you can afford to replace it or live without it if you lose it.

My dad, the watchmaker, would wonder why you came back...

I think best buy offers loss insurance on the iPhone, but it's very expensive and has a high deductible.

Buy a cheapo phone and wait until 2011

State Farm

I have my iPhone insured against loss or damage through State Farm. If I remember correctly, it was ~$40/year.

I just can't fathom how people lose stuff like their phone.

Even phones I WANTED to lose....never. Not once.

How can you possibly blame apple? Are you serious? Maybe att should have insurance as an option but you could have just got a 3rd party option. It's nobodies fault but your own I'm afraid. Could happen with any other valuable item.

Lol yeah MobileMe is great. Since I bought a Macbook, I'm given a free trial and I wont start it until I lose my iPhone because the only reason I would use it would be to find my lost iPhone lol.

Did you try calling your phone? You might be able to hear it ring...just a thought. If that doesn't work then try and remember the last place you left it. Hope this helps.

That sucks i think for a small fee $10-$20 Your Service Provider Should track it down, but that is highly unethical and what company would do that.

But i feel your pain if i ever lose my IPhone I would simply just buy a blackberry....done deal

First of all, AFAIK, BlackBerry doesn't offer this service.

Second of all, $500 is very reasonable. What's stopping you from 'pretending' that you lost/stole it, handing it off to a buddy, and getting the phone for cheap price again?

And don't tell me, "they can block the phone" because they can't.

The problem with that is, I could take my iPhone, sell it to you... then claim you stole it. I'd have your money + get my phone back.

Great. Since so many people lose their phone and goes without help from AT&T, it will be easier to employ the "lost my iPhone" excuse to cancel my data plan.
