Hi there,

I need some help regarding OS X Yosemite, i recently changed directory name on my mac and after restarting the mac it seems that i have lost all my data and settings. I want to know are there any steps to bring back all the settings and data. This is what i did.

1:Went to System Preference.
2:Opened Users and Groups.
3: Authenticated it.
4: Right Clicked on Admin Account and went to advanced setting.
5: Changed directory name from ABC to XYZ.
6: Changed my name from ABC to XYZ.
7: Saved setting and it restarted itself.
8: Logged in back after restart and it seems all my data, home folders and settings are gone.

Please help me to get back my old settings and data. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Device Name: Macbook Pro, 13 Inch, Late 2011

Thanks a lot for reading about my problem even if you couldn't help still i am thankful that you tried.
Many thanks and kindest regards.

Do you have a backup? If yes, then you can do a Time machine restore. If not, then try doing this: Go to Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G, type the address "/users" without the quotes to go to the user directory, see if your old username is there.

Thanks, i found the solution already. Google search worked and it directed me in right direction. All data was available in user account so i copied and pasted. P.S. settings aren't a big deal though. Thanks for your help anyway. Very much appreciated. :)

Sorry, i dont have a backup and i dont know how to create one or use one, am i missing anything? Thanks
No, I was just teasing you a bit, sorry :)

Thing is, your data didn't get lost this time but for next time, I suggest you make backups.

Just get a $40 external harddrive and plug it into your MacBook. It'll ask whether you want to use it for Time Machine (i.e. backups). Choose "yes" and let it run for a couple of hours so it'll back up your data. Then, every week or so, hook it up again to back up your latest data.

Surely'll do so. Thanks a lot.

Thanks to Apple's simplicity and ease of use philosophy its incredibly easy to create a backup. Get an external hard drive, format it in Disk Utility to HFS+, and then turn on Time Machine in the system preferences. OS X may actually ask to use the external drive for your TM backup after you format it anyways.
