Lost Book Marks after Safari Update

New member & 1st time poster. Don't consider myself a power user but fairly savvy nonetheless.
Brief summary: 2011 iMac OS Sierra 10.12.6 plenty of memory & free space. Keep current on all updates. Updated Safari on 6/11...have slow internet but the down load was exceptionally slow. After restart, all Safari book marks had vanished including those in numerous folders in what I call the favorites bar (directly below the address bar).
After the upgrade Safari was behaving oddly and due to the missing book marks, did the usual "housekeeping routines" that usually sets things straight e.g. cleaned out caches/history etc, starting up in safe mode and via home library preferences temporarily removed the Safari plist. Assuredly didn't go into the Safari folder and most certainly didn't remove the Book Mark plist file that resides there. FWIW, tried the acknowledged method to restore Book Marks via TM and made sure I went back in time several days prior to update fiasco to no avail. Would dearly love to resolve this issue. TIA

It sounds like you may have reset Safari in the process. Updating Safari does not remove bookmarks or the bookmark folders. In order to restore Safari using Time Machine you must first open Safari and have it running and then access your Time Machine backup. From there you should be able to restore bookmarks and Safari History.

Not discussion group savvy & having a bit of trouble getting a handle on properly responding here. : ( Hope I haven't made a mess of things.

VERY much appreciate your response & attempt to resolve my problem. Assuredly NOT questioning your opinion on the cause of the lost book marks. I've updated Safari (and all other aspects of Mac for years without mishap. What is puzzling is immediately post update and restart the book marks clearly had vanished which is why I did the assorted Rx's thinking something was corrupted.

FYI after the update Safari is working fine save for the missing book marks.

Waaaa....I could care less about history...I just want my precious book marks back & in their designated locations.

I would gratefully be indebted if you would succinctly list the steps to resolve my dilemma. TIA

Log in to icloud.com, then choose "Settings". Under "Advanced", at the bottom of the page, click "Restore Bookmarks".

Appreciate the suggestion MisterMark. Aware iCloud is an online "repository" but have never used it. As an aside, you & the forum members will undoubtedly find it shocking I've never owned a cell phone either let alone a smart phone. Keeping fingers crossed for a solution to my vanished book marks.
