Recently my 2017 MBP was bricked when I tried to update to Catalina. The computer froze in the "Setting up your Mac" screen never to recover. It seems I had a power button (didn't even know it was there) that was defective and I was not able to force a restart. Apple could not get the system to respond with any of their magic either.

So....new fingerprint sensor requires new logic board which requires new hard drive. Luckily it was still under warranty but I lost some data that was not being uploaded to iCloud.

So I have a couple of questions. I'll try to be brief, but I want to be thorough:

1. While waiting for the repair, I dusted off my 2012 MBP just to keep up with banking, etc. etc. It seems this was a mistake, as my dusty old Safari bookmarks have now replaced all of my most recently updated bookmarks. This is really frustrating! I suppose my most recent bookmarks are lost, but I wanted to ask the experts here before I start the painstaking task of rebuilding them. Can I access my bookmarks history on iCloud?

2. My second issue is I recently bought a DSLR and am quite new at file management with it. I was storing the photos in regular folders on the computer, and I would then drag and drop these into "Photos" so they would be uploaded to iCloud. Is there a way to get the originals in their respective folders to upload to iCloud in the future? The past is gone it seems, which I can live with since it was a fairly recent purchase.

So going forward I am not sure what to do about the older Macbook. I do use it occasionally to stream stuff to the TV. How can I ensure that this old computer is not corrupting my backups in the cloud?

Sorry if these seem like novice questions. I just seem to be losing ground with keeping on top of the newer tech I guess.

Maybe.

iCloud.com, Account Settings. Scroll to the bottom, "Restore Bookmarks". Will be presented a list of "backups". Hope there is one from before you fired up the old Mac.

And: turn off iCloud on the old computer when not using it for "real" work. When need to use it for "real", turn iCloud back on, and should then sync what's there back to old machine. Though can't recall if bookmarks get a "purge or merge" option for iCloud.

Sorry for the late reply. I guess I don't get notifications when there is a response to my posts.

Anyway....I just wanted to say THANK YOU!! That worked. I guess I missed seeing the restore bookmarks at the very bottom. I got all of them back. I appreciate the help.
