Not sure where to post this, but it involves software so here goes. This is a Family IT Guy (FITG) situation – my brother has just gone through a forced upgrade (long story) from Snow Leopard to Sierra because of bad advice from Apple Geniuses (or whatever they’re called these days). Only backup he has (despite multiple warnings from his FITG) is Time Machine. No real backup was made prior to the install, which he did himself. Now he finds that all his Calendar and Notes information is missing-in-action. Apple guys (over the phone) told him that since he wasn’t backed up in The Cloud he was basically toast. He’s in Ohio and I’m in Seattle, so I can’t just pop over and see what he’s got going.
I dislike Time Machine with a deep and righteous hatred, so I don’t use it and only know that it’s a bear to get stuff out of if anything is even a little out of normal. What I’m thinking is needed here is the ability to dredge his Calendar and Notes files out of his Time Machine drive, but since it was a Snow Leopard TM and is now a Sierra TM I do not know how well this will work. I suspect that where these files were located, and perhaps even their formats, were different under Snow Leopard than they are under Sierra.
Any suggestions (other than he start making backups, dammit!)? If we can’t find this stuff on his TM, the next move will be to see if the information still exists on his iPhone (which Apple Geniuses have also recently dorked) or perhaps in an old iPhone backup.
