A friend of mine upgraded her verizon iPhone 4 to os5 and her contact list is empty. Her contacts are on the device as she can input names in emails and texts and the phone number and email address show up for the name. Any ideas?

try a restore from backup.

I called AppleCare before I upgraded. I asked a lot of questions. One important question I asked was about all these problems I'm reading about in the forums. The advisor told me I should grab one of those contact backup apps in the app store. I grabbed one that backs up contacts to a vcf file that I then emailed to myself. Problem solved. I also backed up address and ical on my Mac.

It turns out I didn't lose anything. Well that's not entirely true. All the events I had sent over from iPhoto were gone but I can put those back easy enough. In the end I wasn't worried because I had everything backed up in advance. I also ran a backup in iTunes before starting the upgrade. During the upgrade, iTunes hung on transferring purchases. I killed it. I really hate iTunes.

For now I'm not using iCloud. Yet. I'm thinking of turning on wifi sync. I want to see how that works. While I do want to migrate over from MobileMe so I can get a refund for my unused portion, I'll give iCloud another few days before I jump on board. The main thing I want is to back up my device to iCloud so I'm not relying on iTunes.
