1) Thanks for giving us the TL;DR: on a 10-minute video.

2) It's on Louis Rossmann's channel. When his time isn't dedicated to "soddering", he's on an ardently anti-Apple rampage.

It was not Louis but Jessica Jones Video that Louis posted and this shows how much I dislike Apple in their evil ways. Hope no one is still supporting Tim Cook/Apple as the be all nice guy/company. Louis has very good reason to jump on Apple as we should as well. If we don't Apple will continue with this stupitdy.

Good to know there’s a place to turn to.

Does stink that Apple handles it the way they do, that’s just wrong. But as stated it’s not confined to Apple so it’s silly to hate just on them.

The big lesson here is back up your data. Often. The "trip of a lifetime" and these people just never "got around" to offloading/backing up thier photos. I feel they this shows they rarely backup because if they did it more often, it wouldn’t be something they needed to "get around" to doing.
It’s typical, though. Most people I know so rarely backup thier portable devices to a desktop or cloud location. It’s a lot of laziness.

On one hand, this is the world we are living right now. Tech giants boycott customers and ignore their requests for a better product. Instead, they introduce new products nobody asks for and solve imaginary problems.

On the other hand, these guys don’t have the idea to regularly backup their critical devices. In this case, their photos can be easily backed up using either iTunes or some other third party software. Even though albums and such cannot be retained, at least photos and videos are there.

And for the data recovery part, all I can say is damn, so cool and nice to see this guy recovers all of those photos from a water damaged iPhone.

Any person that has irreplaceable photos on their phone and does not backup doesn't get much sympathy from me. Foolish decisions lead to foolish consequences. Apple gives customers multiple means of backing up, including its iCloud services.

I don't blame Apple for not engaging in data recovery as it certainly would not be cost effective for their techs to perform such services. Yes, they probably could direct customers to third party resources, but even maintaining those relationships would not necessarily be in their best interest, so I understand them not doing it.

This is why I'm leaving Apple. It's their mind set. There attitude.

Do you really think other vendors would offer better support for lost data? If you don't like Apple, go get some Android and see how that works out for you. If it's better stay with it, if not don't.

Sometimes laziness, yes, but I think it's frequently just plain old ignorance. A little while ago I mentioned backups to my mother-in-law, and it was literally like I was speaking a foreign language - she had no idea what I was talking about. Surprisingly, it simply never occurred to her. And she isn't completely unfamiliar with technology.

After explaining, she got it, and I'm pretty sure she does it now (although I should probably double check). Backups are easy to perform/automate (especially via iCloud) - unless the concept is totally foreign to you. Which, perhaps, was the case with the couple in the video. I'll bet they back up their photos now.

Apple is not in the business of data recovery, especially personal, one of a kind photos. It may sound like Apple is lying etc. but, they aren't.

1) If Apple allowed (passively or otherwise) employees to engage in data recovery measures for customers, it would open them up for lawsuits for loss of property, not to mention claims of theft and or misuse of property.

The Apple forums is not the official voice of Apple.

The video is nothing more than a hatchet hit piece on Apple. And it is poorly done.

The couple in the video should have backed up their phone. Hard lesson learned.

OP, if you are using this video as an excuse to leave Apple, you need to find a better excuse.

Of course people should do a backup.
And it's not the worst thing here Apple doesn't know how to fix it. They hire lots of uneducated hacks
who can only say "try to restart".
The worst here is they know it can be fixed, but they BAN anyone telling people it's possible.
This is communist Soviet Union from the 70s. This is Animal Farm.
Coming from the company created as "something different". So sad :(

You are twisting this to meet your preferred narrative. It's not a matter of Apple knowing how to do it or not, it's a matter of if they are committed to doing it. It's clear they are not, and for good reasons noted in posts above.

You say "uneducated hacks" when you point your finger, but again you are wrong. Apple does use education as a factor while hiring in consideration of position requirements, as do all tech companies. And I doubt that third party staffing providers are going to send Apple "uneducated hacks", and put a good contract in jeopardy.

They ban based on a predetermined set of criteria. Do you really think the moderator is banning based on anything other than that? What interest would that person have in doing so? Perhaps a conspiracy, something akin to Animal Farm?

"Not in Apple's best interest to direct people to third party solutions"

Yeah, it's anti-customer BS like that that is causing this company to crumble before our eyes

a) It would not be cost effective to do data recovery in house.

b) Maintaining third party data recovery relationships would imply to some customers a certain amount of responsibility on Apple for the data under recovery by the third party. People get emotional about losing data, and it could end up being more bad press for Apple than the very small number of biased reports like the OP is showing us.

c) Smart people backup important data. Apple has more important projects to attend rather than going down the data recovery rabbit hole to appease stupid people.

what? not lying?

if they say it cant be done - it is lying. if they dont offer it by themselves, then they should guide the customer to take contact to services that can do it. when they say ”it can be done” that is lying - there are no excuses.

how about their customer service? if you watched the video, you saw, that the customer service said excatly the same.

Shouldn't you practice what you preach? Looks like you have a current gen iPad Pro with pencil and iPhone XS. Thats roughly $2k you have spent at Apple in the last few months. If you are going to try and convince others to stop supporting Apple maybe you should do the same. Otherwise it is just empty words.

Everyone here seems to have completely missed the point.
The problem isn't that Apple doesn't provide data recovery services.
The problem isn't even that Apple doesn't refer customers to companies that do.

The problem is that Apple blatantly lies to the customer and claims that it's impossible to recover data from an iPhone, which is a demonstrably false claim. And not only that but when someone points out, in their community forums, that it is indeed possible those posts are deleted by Apple's community managers.

It's a clear case of Apple wanting to keep their customers uninformed.

It is, but they shouldn't be doing that.. Weather that itself is the truth, or its just marketing made-up, it still gets the attention in the end. But Appe won't admit it, so why will users ?

If the 'hate' is so powerful, why bring it down ?
