Lost Hard Drive Storage

I had some kind of strange virus that took control of my Safari in OS Tiger. So then I used the Apple repair disks to erase the hard drive and virus.

When I went to reload the OS, I noticed that the storage capacity went from 80GB down to 74.4GB.

Question: Is this lost storage due to deleted files? What can I do to regain the lost storage capacity?

What is the advertised size of the hard drive? An 80GB hard drive is actually formatted to about 74.5GB so maybe you never had that extra 5.5GB.

Also, as much as you don't wanna hear this, you almost certainly didn't have a virus and depending on the problem, a full format and reinstall was probably unnecessary. Windows needs a lot of these reformats but in general, Macs have better, quicker and easier troubleshooting techniques, depending on the issue.

Firstly, i doubt it was a virus, infact, im sure it wasn't a virus.

Secondly, if your HD was labelled as 80gigs, then formatted it will only be about 74.4 gigs in reality, thats how it is on my powerbook anyway
