Lost Internet (lightening) -- all else fine..?

Well, here's the deal. While away on vacation we had a lightening strike close to the house. Several neighbors had near total appliance destruction -- one even had the kids battery-powered toys turn on by themselves... All I seem to have lost is my iMac's ability to communicate with our high-speed cable modem. Comcast was at the house today and they tested the line-in plus several modems, all of which were fine. The problem appears to be in the iMac. Everything else about the machine is perfect -- just no internet connection.

Not being much of a tech wizard, I have no idea what might have been fried, how much repair might cost, and how long I might be without my precious Mac... any ideas??? Thanks (sadly lugging my Windows laptop home from work...)

If you use a regular phone line to connect your iMac to the Internet....maybe the modem?

How are you connecting to the modem? Cable or wireless? If you are using a cable you might be able to use the wireless connection still. So getting a wireless router would be a cheaper solution than repairing your iMac.
But then again, the airport may be borked as well.

Was connected via cable directly to the iMac. Actually had an Airport lite that I bought in order to send signal to my laptop when I work on the back porch -- but the signal strength and quality was so poor that I gave the thing away...

So how much am I looking at? Is it a card or something more??

If you're talking about the iMac in your sig, should'nt it have an Airport card in it already ... in that case you'd need a router, preferably the new Airport Extreme [wireless /n capability]

EDIT : Also, if you get that, be sure to get the $2 Wireless-N enabler from Apple. It'll be worth it!

Call your home insurance. Mine paid for a new Macintosh when my iMac was fried by lightning (according to the insurance guy, they had to pay for about 200 computers that night).

Sorry for the confusion -- I used to have the Airport router (not the extreme)-- didn't perform well enough so I gave it away. So yes, my iMac has the card -- I'm asking about the repair of the line-in to which the cable was directly connected at the time of the hit.

Insurance won't work for this one -- other than the internet connection, the thing works perfectly. They won't total the machine for that kind of damage...

lightning is an act of god, out of warranty

get a cheap wireless router. i think the apple routers are kind of ripoffs unless you need airtunes.

All's well that ends well... I made an appointment at the Genius Bar at the local Apple Store for Saturday morning. The fix required replacement of the logic board (an $800 fix). The iMac was still under warrenty, so there was no charge and it was ready in less than 24 hours. I was back online by noon Sunday. Truely a positive repair experience and a better than expected outcome...

However, mildly confusing that they have an $800 'part' in a $600 computer.

I'd just buy the $600 computer and have lots of spare parts to sell on eBay and get half my money back.
