now if you let AT&T know you lost your iPhone will they contact you if someone tries to activate it?

Wouldn't hurt to try.
Do you have MobileMe? You could use the "Find my iPhone" feature. And you have to have it enabled for that service.

No AT&T will not do anything about it and Apple supports the phone and not the customer.
In short, you lost your phone...AT&T or Apple are really not going to be able to help you with this one.
