Lost my email with upgrade

I just upgraded my iPad2 to iOS5, and lost all my email messages in the process! Is there some way to prevent this, or recover from it? It's not so much of a problem for me - mainly an incoveniece - since I keep all of my important messages on my PC, but I need to upgrade a friend's iPad at some point, and the iPad is her only device.

Which email service are/were you using? MobileMe? Gmail? Exchange?

I have earthlink and also gmail. Come to think of it, I don't use gmail on my PC, so those messages are probably gone. I think gmail may have archived messages, and so those may still be available.
