Whilst helping my father-in-law move house we found his old iPad mini that he hasn’t used in years, with a four-digit passcode on it. His current iPad requires a six-digit password, so clearly they are not using the same code.

it is about four years since this iPad was last used, so we are struggling to figure out the code!

We can still see this iPad on his iCloud information (which is how I know what version of iOS it is running). Given my father-in-law can access his iCloud account, is there any way to remotely reset the iPad so we can set it up as new and pass it on to a friend?

You can connect it to a computer and reset the iPad. Also, be sure to remove it from his iCloud account, so that it's not activation locked once you pass it on to a friend.
