Just as the title says...my little darling 2 3/14 has lost our ATV2 remote.
So I was using my iphone and ipad as a remote.
For some reason I couldn't connect to my videos on my computer so I (stupidly in hindsight) switched off home sharing on the ATV2, hoping to switch it back on again and reset everything.
But...now my iphone remote wont work and I have no way of telling the ATV2 to turn on home sharing again!

ANY ADVICE?

Regards
D.

any chance you have a programmable remote? maybe for your cable box?
check the manual, most of them have the apple codes in them.

borrow one from a friend?

The remotes are cheap. My 1 year old wrecked our first remote, so I have picked up 2 more. Now when 1 is missing I have a back up.

Do you have any programmable remotes laying around the house? If you have a smart one like a Logitech, you can just add the ATV to it as a device (I did this for a Bose Wave radio after one of my toddlers threw its remote in the trash). Alternatively, if you have any sort of basic learning remote you can carry it with you to the local Apple store and have it learn the commands from one of the remotes there.

I have done exactly as the OP described, only solution for me was to order a new remote. The first thing I did when it arrived was to set up the TV remote as a backup Apple TV remote just in case!

They are troublesome little things, my wife dropped one in the toilet and the kids have lost two, never to be seen again. Number four is still going strong though (touch wood).

you don't have any other remotes?
a lot of television, cable box, and stereos that can control other devices already have the apple commands built in, you'll have to look in the manual to figure out how to program them, but it's all built into the remote.

You named your child "2 3/14"? No wonder he/she was angry with you and hid your remote! ;)

Unfortunately, as said above, you do need a physical remote with the ATV. Even if you have Remote apps, there will be times when you'll need to turn off Home Sharing (it's a bit silly that doing so affects the remote ability) and you'll be stuck.

There's a good chance any nearby Mac user might have one, I assume they all use the same frequency. Once you're up and running, the ATV system for learning other remote controls is quite good!
