Lost USB port activity?

Hi.
I'm new to mac and so far love it, but I have a question.

Recently, my G4 (new in april 2005) powerbook could not recognize my flash drive (256mb geek squad) or my multi reader for digital camera memory cards.

Usually I see the usb activity on the desk top (the flash memory shows up on the desktop).

Also, it is experiencing shut-down and start up problems (much slower than usual or the shut down does not fully complete).

Is there a diagnostic test that I can run for this?

I will contact applecare but wanted to post here as well.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

power supply problem is usually one of the causes of non responses usb port... however, if you have notebook i'd say it probably something else. what kind of mac do you have?
