lots of beachballs

Hi everyone,
thanks for your help with topics I've posted in the past. I've been reading a few posts, and I'm starting to think I'm not experiencing the performance I should be getting out of my iBook. It's a new G4, bought 2 weeks ago. I upgraded to 1Gb of ram, with the 40Gb HD. I seem to be getting beachballs quite often, even just when opening a document. The computer will usually completely freeze when java or a flash website is running. During these times, Safari is usually the only program running.. I usually completely quit programs when I'm done with them. What can I do to improve performance? I often get a beachball for a couple of seconds even when I'm just opening the finder..

Go to About This Mac from the Apple menu and see if the new 1GB of RAM is registering. Then, if it is, open up Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder in your Applications folder and see which processes are taking up all of your resources.

java is pretty borked in safari right now (and has been since 10.4). use firefox instead.

Take out the memory and run Disk First Aid and/or fsck -y on the drive.

Good chance the memory "may" be causing problems, this may also have corrupted the file system/catalog on the drive -- small chance, but if you do not check in now you may have major problems later.

Where, may I ask, did you purchase your RAM at?

Remove the RAM you installed, and see if performance improves.

It's from Apple, they installed it.. I got the computer made to order.

I'll try the other things mentioned above, but let me know if you have any other suggestions!

Oh, also, I can't seem to get java to work in firefox. It's enabled in preferences, but it doesn't load when I try, that's why I use it in Safari, which doesn't work well at all.
