So, I have a friend who I talk to on the phone quite often. She has an AT&T 3G phone... not an iPhone... some other phone. It's like a RAZR or something... but keep in mind that it's 3G.

When I used to talk to her on my old iPhone, in the middle of our conversation I'd randomly hear this loud screech. It sounded almost like someone screaming bloody murder, but it was clearly some kind of electrical interference or glitch of some kind... Well, ever since I got my iPhone 3G, people have been telling me that they hear it from my phone now! I don't hear a thing... but the person on the other end will randomly be like, "What was that?!?" Has anyone else experienced this?

It sounds to me like an AT&T 3G issue over an iPhone issue since it happens on other 3G phones... Maybe it's something with 3G in my area?

Same Here

My fiance is having this same issue now on her new 3G iPhone after having the same problem on her previous LG Shine - others on the line claim they hear a loud screeching noise that she does not. It never happened on her old non-3G Motorola PEBL. The problem has only begun to appear on her latest 3G phones. Interestingly, I have not (yet) ran into this problem on my 3G iPhone.

I wish we could find out more as I have ran across just a few similar incidents on the web and ATT just wants to replace the phone (they did the Shine). However, happening to two phones, one after another, I wonder if it is actually a problem with the individual phones?

By the way, we're in the Atlanta area if location is any factor in this problem.

Loud electrical screeches during calls

Others have been complaining of these loud screeches during calls with me as well. Although I might be tempted to believe it is just my voice, both my father and my wife insist that it is some problem with my phone. None of the other 4 iPhones in my family act up, but one of my co-workers is suffering the same fate.

Although my local Apple genius hadn't heard of the problem, he suggested I visit an ATT store and ask them to replace the SIM, which I did. Not enough time has passed, so I can't say if that has worked. I'll report back.

Loud electrical screech during calls.

This is a followup to my previous post. At the advice of an Apple Genius-bar expert, I visited an ATT store and had the SIM chip replaced in my 3G iPhone. That has unfortunately NOT stopped the loud screeches that are heard by others when talking with me.

There is still hope. After working through the patterns with my cohort at work suffering the same problem, we may have found a pseudo-pattern. Screeches are momentary blasts of sound rather than a constant sound. They might happen once, or several times in a row. They don't happen when you are using the Edge network, only when you are using the 3G network. They happen when you are in a low signal situation that might (on occasion :) cause your call to drop instead of sounding the screech.

We will keep at it. Any additional observations would be welcomed.

Going through the same problem here.

Just curious, where are you guys located? I'm in S. Florida.

I'm also occasionally getting hung up text messages (won't send), calls that won't connect when dialing out, and very crappy signal where the caller I'm speaking with can't understand me.

If I switch to 2G all is fine.

Why is this only happening to certain phones?

My GF mentions that this happens sometimes when my phone drops a call. She says it is one of the worst sounds ever. I can't hear a thing of course.
