Has anyone had a problem with loud "bursts" of static on their iPhone 3g? I bought an iPhone 3g for both myself and my wife, and I've had this problem on both phones. Neither I nor my wife can hear the "bursts" on the iPhone, but the person that we are talking to hears it on their end. The "bursts" sound like high pitched static or even screeching, and they only last for a split second at a time. There is no normal pattern to them (I've had calls with my wife from my office where I heard 3 or 4 bursts, and then other calls I might hear it once). I'm in a 3G market, so the phone is always operating in 3G mode.

Anyone help here will be greatly appreciated!

Hi my friend is having the same problem with his iPhone 3g. We have tested out many situations and the static seems to just come and go at random times. If anyone else has experienced this problem and have found a solution for it please share the info. :D

I've actually had these same bursts, but when they happen, only i can hear them. The party on the other end cannot. They force me to have to hang-up and re call because of how loud they are. Can't be a software issue. Do you think this warrants an exchange from Apple?

its the total opposite in our situation here. The static can be heard from both ends but is much louder to the person called from the phone. So far we've come up with the possibility that it's static build up interfering with the phone. If anything in your house builds a large amount of static in ex. your carpet, blankets or anything else, this could be the problem. My friend's blanket builds large amount of static and he's usually on his bed using his phone. This was his theory. We're gonna put anti static material held in by a protective case and see if this does any changes.

Hi, Jimba08
did you manage to get it fixed? I've been having the same problems, only i can hear the static.

Had a similar problem. The CSR identified it as a 'waterfall noise' from previous complaints. AT&T parked a tech in our driveway for a few hours doing I do not know what. The problem was at the tower site and they fixed it. The tech told me it was a pain in the ass because it was not just an AT&T problem, but that it also required the attention of some engineers from the company or companies that provide and operate some of the equipment at the site. He also mentioned that the problem occurred for other devices that used concurrent data and voice services over 3g.

I took it to the apple store and they were unable to replicate. They told me to go to ATT for a new SIM. I got the new SIM and within days, I had the same problem. Took it back to the apple store and they replaced it for me. Good luck!

It may save you some time if you go to ATT first for a new sim (free) before going to apple, instead of having apple tell you to go to att before they can do anything.

Oddly enough, I used to have this problem with both my BlackBerry Curve and Bold, but not everybody heard them (both on AT&T). I never heard them, but (unfortunately) the person to whom I speak the most on the phone always did. Drove him INSANE. He hasn't mentioned the problem since I got my 3GS, though.
